I love my money system

I started using money last year in my classroom. I have to teach every subject to my wonderful first and second graders so I use it across the board. I have made copies of it in ones, fives, tens, and twentys. When the students come in the have a dollar on their desk. If they put away thier belongings and start on their morning work in a timely fashion they can bank their dollar. I give everyone a ziplock with their name on it. If I catch someone being good they can earn X amount of money depending on how many students are not doing what they are supposed to do. If I am teaching and some of the students are off task I reward those lisenting by giving them money I don't say anything I just walk over and place it on their desk and they bank it. First Graders and Money

I try to mix all sorts of activities before, during, after my money unit. Here goes my attempt to help......
During Math Meeting: Each student has a clipboard with a stack of papers on it that we work through together each morning. (Do not start this at the beginning of the year.)
Together we fill in their paper calendars with the Student of the Day and also mark with stars any special occassion (birthdays, holidays, etc)
The next page is a weather graph....also done with the Student of the Day.
The third page is one that has lines like this,
1)_____, ______, _____, ______etc...(fill the pg and number each line) I start out the number pattern and then the class helps me finish it.
The next page is a blank 100 square graph. Each day, together, we fill in a line of 10 ...

spending your own money

As a first year teacher, I was ecstatic to get a job after spending my first year out of college subbing. During college, I attended bookfairs, library sales, etc to build up a classroom library for various levels, bought bulletin board stuff, asked for teaching resources, displays etc as xmas gifts during student teaching, all to build up for the one day when I had my own classroom. Jobs were scarce in my area again this year (what else is new lol) and I was so pleased to get a job that I wouldnt dare ask for much, I'd teach out of a closet if I had to this year just to know I had a job, but at the same time, am getting really tired of my well meaning administrator sweetly telling me not spend my own money, not to spend my whole 1st paycheck before I get it. Class Money

I have used classroom money for my discipline plan for the last two years and love it! What's more, the kids love it! I create 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 dollar bills based on whatever the classroom theme is for the year (I did oceans one year and jungles one year...this coming year I'm doing a sports theme.) Each deonmination is printed on a different color of paper so it is very easy to identify.
The students can earn rewards for turning in homework early, turning in forms on time, transitioning early, demonstrating good citizenship, etc. This is really the teacher's discresion so they always have to be on their best behavior because they never know when I will reward them.
They can also be fined for things such as no name papers, breaking class rules, talking in the hall, leani...

You probably want to start with the value of the coins and what they look like. I would think if they are working at a 5th grade math level they should know the values, but it's a good idea to review. I use fake money that came with our district's curriculum. The following ideas are what I've used with my 4th graders. For all it's a good idea to use money (fake money), and maybe all of some of the students can get away from using money to figuring it out without the money.

I think it's always a great idea to relate it to the real world, which is easy to do with money! With my students we set up a little "store", and I put a price on the items. They had to practice "buying" 2-3 items, adding the total, paying with $1 or $2 (whatever amount you chose) and then making change.

Money Gifts

It seems to depend on the parents. Some parents just seem to want to give money. I currently have one set of parents who always gives money with a Christmas card at Christmastime. (I have taught the siblings so I know the pattern.) We had another set of parents who would give money to all the teachers in the school whehter they had those kids or not. (We have a small school and this family could afford it.)

I've never received a check, but I've had several parents give gift certifictes and a few that will include money over the years. I send a nice thank you note as I would with any gift and let them know what I am buying with their money.

My team of 4th grade teachers uses play money with our kids. Each receives $50 the 1st day of each quarter. They earn money for turning in homework (random assignments not everyone), behaving appropriately, even class participation. You can reward them for whatever you think needs to be re-enforced. We also fine them for inappropriate behavior, not having certain assignments done (again randomly), etc. You can adjust the fine based on the crime. We teach about money so they have a balance sheet to keep track of their money. They must have a balance sheet. I do trade ins where they can trade in small bills ($10s and $20s) for $50s and $100s. Money (coins) for the date

Do you use coins for the date? I have a metal cookie sheet that I hung on my wall and I have money with megnets on the back and for the date we place the money on the cookie sheet. I usually start late in a month. I think we started in late November.

Date: Tuesday November 18, 2003 - What coins will we use to make 18 cents. The first few days it take a bit longer to do this as part of your calendar routine. Then the next day we "add a penny". Then when we get to 20 cents we talk about trading in and what we can trade in. Often we trade pennies for nickels and then your nickels for dimes just becasue that is how the children can "see it". Each student receives a packet of $50 at the beginning of each quarter. They also have a balance sheet where they keep track of earned money and fined money.

Ways to earn money:
1. Getting planner signed nightly ($20)
2. Returning Friday folder the following school day ($50)
3. Random homework assignments ($10 - 100)
4. Good behavior ($10 - 100)

Ways to be fined money:
1. Not getting planner signed (-$20)
2. Not returning Friday folder the following school day (-$50)
3. Not turning in the homework others get paid for (-$10 - 100)
4. Poor choices (-$10 - 100)

Big money

Seems to me that if parents expect to "buy" special treatment for themselves or their own children, that is VERY unethical. Maybe it's because I'm in my first year, and haven't suffered enough yet with low budgets, but I think I'd rather do without stuff, than have have parents telling teachers and principals how to do their jobs. $100,00 dollars is a LOT of money.... so much in fact, that maybe your school can even "afford" to let one or two of them get ticked off in order to remind them who is who.

What is it that we are trying to teach our students and children? That the guy with the biggest wallet wins? That we should always strive for more, more, more? That education of is a competitive sport? That anything and everything can be bought with money?
