First student teacher

This past year I also had my first student teacher and I worried about most of the same things you are worrying about. It ended up being a fantastic experience and I learned as much as she did. It was hard letting her take the reins, and I just had to remind myself that she was trained and able to do the job. I knew I could always reteach a lesson and that the students do learn from all types of lessons and styles.

At first I was a bit uncomfortable because I'm such a perfectionist (with myself, not others). However now that I've had teacher assistants for the past 5 years, etc., I'm not as worried about having to be on top of everything all the time. I also realized that when I have an off day even with a student teacher it's a valuable lesson for the student teacher. We cannot ...

I have a couple of questions and suggestions.

I know as a cooperating teacher we feel a lot of responsibility when we have a student teacher. And depending on how our student teaching was very much reflects on what we do as cooperating teachers.

Is this your student teacher's first student teaching experience?

If so she is bound to be nervous and may actually be more nervous the more you suggest things to her. She may be feeling that all your suggestions mean that she's not good and this will foster her nervousness, etc., While suggestions are good, I think sometimes asking questions and letting the student teacher do the reflecting is better for them. And as we do with our students, it's important to find the good things she can do and point those out as well. It's amazing what...

I graduated in January 2001 and had a great experience with a co-operating teacher who was literally young enough to be my daughter(48 vs 28)! I don't know where you and your student teacher's ages will fit into the mix, but keep that possibility in mind!
I student taught in two different rooms/grade levels with 2 different teachers. One was great, one wasn't so hot. The great one gave me LOTS of feedback; every day after the kids left, she'd drop everything, sit at the table with me and ask:Well, how do YOU think it went today. I had her full attention, she did not grade or shuffle papers, etc. I so enjoyed these conversations and her advice. I'd also find little notes from her (& the kids) tacked up on our message board (everyone had a slot). The not-so-great teacher sat around &...

Hi Debbie,
I just want to let let you know that your student teacher is feeling just as, if not more nervous than you. I just finished my practicum in April. I had the opportunity to teach with 3 great teachers. However, i did not always feel that way while in the classroom. In my first placement I worked between two grade one teachers. This was an excellent opportunity because i got to do a lot of teaching between the two classes. I team planned with the teachers, they welcomed my ideas and challenged me to take on all aspects of the job. I created the units, found all the resources the students would need, I organized the guest speakers, made all lesson plans and worksheets, and praticipated in parent teacher-interviews. The teachers and I often stayed until 8:00 pm planning a...

Debbie,

First, I want to applaud you for taking a student teacher. It must be quite difficulty to do this. I am very territorial and I do not know if I could do this. I just completed my student teaching. After the first month of observing, I took over completely for the following 3 1/2 months. I can tell you that I had extreme difficulty with the idea that I will not finish the school year with 'my' kids. HA! I cried almost the entire day yesterday.
Ok.. what made my cooperating teacher the best. (As a matter of fact, she won the cooperating teacher of the year award at our banquet)
First, have a place set up for your student teacher. This will make her feel like a part of the class, not just a visitor. My teacher had a name plate made for me. That made me feel great. Te student...

Does the university supply a supervisor that comes in and observes your student teacher every few weeks? Having an on-going dialogue with that person, I think, is key.

I just finished student teaching last month and every moment of it was wonderful. From the very first day of school (well, even the week before school started), my cooperating teacher viewed me as the second teacher in the room. She told all 15 of our kindergartners how lucky they were because they had 2 teachers while most classrooms only had one. We generally split up each day so that each of us would lead half of the day. After my lead weeks (I did 3), we pretty much would split up the weeks so that she would lead some days and I would lead other days. She would be in the room or out of the room as much as I want...

Hi,
I finished my student teaching last fall! For the first couple weeks you will probably spend most of your time observing the teacher. While observing I took notes on how she presented the lesson, how she engaged kids and kept them motivated, discipline system, etc...I also worked with small groups and one on one during work time. I wanted to get to know the students as best as I could. I felt they responded better getting to know me and me getting to know them. I talked with my teacher a lot and asked her tons of questions. She is an awesome teacher and has been teaching for over 20 years, so I picked her brain whenever I had the opportunity. You will probably slowly take over the class one subject at a time. This was a nice way to ease into full time teaching, and then I still had ...

Helping a nervous student teacher!

I am the type of person who simply reads over these messages and never pays any real attention to them. When I saw the nervous student teacher remark I had to read to see what it was about. I am currently in my first year of teaching and could imagine no other profession. I also have a very good friend who is currently in student teaching. I get emails and phone calls frequently explaining how unhappy she is and how she feels helpless. This is hard for a veteran teacher to understand. It would seem that schedules and lesson plans should come so simply. Then, as student teachers we are given unit topics only because the real teacher doesn't want to teach it herself. Student teaching is just that, a student in training. Each day and with more experience we learn as we go. In my o...

I have had 2 student teachers over the past 2 years. It was a wonderful experience for me. I was lucky to have two student teachers who were very competent, so I didn't have to work hard on skills (mostly fine tuning). It can be such a learning experience to let someone else get involved in your class and teach them. As you evaluate their teaching techniques, you can't help but think about your own. I think I became a more reflective teacher after critiquing someone else.

The first day I had my student teacher I introduced her to the class and explained to them that she was a teacher practicing her teaching before she got a class of her very own. I also told them that she had the same authority to discipline as I did, and I would show her where I kept the parent's phone numbers. ...

Student Teacher Needs

After a space of their own, I would have to say that feedback and letting go of the students are the most important things.

I student taught last fall and my coop. teacher never gave me any feed back except at the start of the year when she told me I was doing "Great." You can imagine my shock when at midterm she presented my supervisor with a three page list of every mistake I had ever made and some that I don't know where she got. I had even asked her at the start of the year to let me know these things.

At the root of it all was her inability to let go, even after teaching 12 years. She simply did not want to let me teach "her kids". It took her weeks before she would even let me read them a story! So when she absolutely had to let me teach, I'd had little practice, and...
