I am trying to figure out where to go next in my language arts lesson plans. I have taught the basic parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs) Then I taught the writing process. We just completed our first writing assignment where we went through the entire process. Now I am trying figure out where to go from here. I would like to talk about each one of the 6 + 1 writing traits per writing assignment and really focus on that for that assignment, but that is the only thing I have decided to do; I don't know how to go about it. I teach 5th grade. I would appreciate help SO much. Everything I have posted lately has not gotten any replies :( I am hoping it was just slow from the swith, and now it will pick back up.

Hi Nichole,

I am a 4th grade teacher, and I wanted to work with the 6 traits as well. A 5th grade teacher suggested I borrow her copy of 6+1 Traits of Writing (for grades 3+) by Ruth Culham. I borrowed it and returned it to her the next day, not because it wasn't what I needed, but because it was such a great resource that I immediately ordered my own copy. You might want to see if you can get your hands on a copy of it. It breaks the traits down individually and provides examples of how to teach them. Hope this helps.

Try reading After the End, by Barry Lane or Craft Lessons by Ralph Fletcher. Their my bible for writing.
