Another furniture question from me

We are replacing our living room furniture and giving the old furniture to my son and his wife. I went to Ethan Allen yesterday and picked the style I want for a sofa and two chairs and also looked at fabric. Here’s my question: do you stick with neutrals in your furniture or are you more colorful. I usually lean toward neutral and use pillows, area rugs, and art to add color, but I did see some lovely furniture in brighter colors. I am just curious about what other people do.

Neutral Furniture

I stick with neutral colored living room furniture. My color is in my rug, throw pillows and artwork.

I always do neutral big pieces then add color and texture with smaller pieces, art, and accessories.

I always purchase neutral furniture. My house has a pretty neutral palette overall (grey, navy, white/cream, and some pink in my bedroom) as I’m not a fan of bold colors but if I wanted to add more color in accessories I could. I don’t want to have to purchase new furniture if I get tired of the color.

Color!

We’ve had a navy couch/chairs and a red couch and chair so apparently I’m the oddball that wants COLOR. Our current couch is neutral…and boring so I’ve covered it with a patterned furniture cover (Swift, DS, and stains go hand in hand so it protects the couch, too).

I hate pastels so I avoid them at all costs.

Both my living room and my family room have a neutral couch etc with one colorful side chair that sets the tone for the accent colors all around the room. I consider my house colorful but prefer to keep my walls and larger furniture pieces neutral.

I try to do large items in neutral colors. Patterns are brought in with pillows and accent chairs.Textures brought in with accent furniture,pillows and throw blankets.

We have neutral sofas and a circular accent chair.

Once I had a purple loveseat for my basement and loved it. It was eventually moved into our office. It worked with so many different colors. I got rid of it when we moved but wish I still had it.

My house is Mission style and the living room/dining room is naturally dark with all the wood. Main furniture is brown leather but I needed a pop of colour to brighten it up. So I bought a deep red loveseat. I love it and it suits perfectly.

Neutral for the large pieces. I’m adding several pieces to my room. This shows what I’m getting. The ottoman will be blue and the chair will be striped.

I got a dark green

couch in the 90's (very popular color back then). We had it until if finally broke down. What I realized later was that having color in the furniture definitely determined how I decorated the rest of the room. Now I have neutral colored furniture, but I put lots of color on the walls. Changing the paint color is (for me) a cheap way of changing up a room because I do the painting myself. (I know that is not for everyone.) I love color, but it's on my walls, not in the furniture.

Always neutral in anything big -- furniture, cabinets, floors, etc. Then color in the small things, like pillows, curtains, maybe a painted wall. That's because trends change so often that if you have an orange couch, in a few years, you won't want an orange couch anymore. And I can't afford to buy a new couch every few years! Pillows are in the annual budget, couches are not!

Color here. We have a deep red (almost burgundy) leather couch, patterned chairs and a blackish recliner in the living room. We also have neutral walls and a LOT of wood. Hardwood floors and trim, 3 wood cabinets, 4 wood tables, built in window seats that are the same as the trim, a wooden mantle and wood blinds. Our whole house is done in bungalow style with farmhouse influences. The majority of our furniture would fall under antiques. When we had the red sofa reupholstered, the stuffing was moss and horse hair. The frame was rough cut 4x4s with pegs.

I have always done neutral. I'm not good enough with decorating to work around large objects with bold colors . My previous apartment had an accent wall and it drove me nuts because then I had to match the entire room with that color. Beige all the way, here!

Colorful

We love bold colors like emerald green or navy or deep burgundy for couches. We add patterns with colorful prints and patterns to the art work, rugs and pillows. We also love hardwood floors. Walls are always off white for us. We love our leather furniture from Lazyboy. We would get bored with neutral gray and biege furniture.

Adding to my minimalistic first response:

I use a lot of color in my house, but either in the furniture or in the walls—both would be too much. I am on my second (probably last, since I’m not hard on furniture and I bought quality) couch/loveseat. The first set was in the hunter green from the early ‘90s. My walls then were neutral. Now I have neutral furniture but color on the walls. And no matter what the furniture or wall colors, I use lots of color in my artwork and decor, and lots of wood and natural elements like stone—not chrome, metal, or glass (unless it’s art). It’s rather in the Arts & Crafts style.

I am definitely not a minimalist when it comes to decorating or using color.

I think navy is considered a neutral color.

plain colors

Our sofa is navy and one chair has a pattern. I don't mind either way. But staying with basics and then using art and pillows and rugs to add color does make sense. Those you can change out more often. Decorating can be fun.

We have neutral colors for our formal living room - a gray couch and I add color with pillows, accessories, etc.

Our couch in the family room is orange. I thought it was hideous when DH picked it out, but it looks amazing with the gray walls.

It’s fun to hear about everyone’s color preferences. I will probably stick with neutrals for my new furniture and accent with some warm colors.
