I recently took up knitting, and after some initial frustration, I absolutely love it! I am in the midst of four projects right now - scarves for my two best friends, a winter hat for myself, and soon to begin my first sweater! I also got a stash of leftover yarn as part of a grab bag gift, and I am thinking of turning that into a drawstring bag to keep my projects in.

My students have seen me progress from a rank amateur to, well, just an amateur. Several of them have expressed an interest in knitting too. I have a few books designed for kids (that I used to teach myself, actually) and am thinking of starting a little crafts group that meets during recess. We have a crafting club as part of our Friday afternoon club time, but unfortunately I'm sorta directing a show during that time slot (-: I'd much rather be knitting, honestly!

Anyone else into knitting here?

I LOVE knitting! I have knit scarves for my entire grade level (there are 10 of us plus 3 aides and 2 special ed teachers) and I've gotten the entire school involved now it seems because I keept getting requests LOL. I taught the office ladies and a couple of other interested teachers. It's SO incredibly relaxing. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who enjoys it. Have you checked out the cool knitting patterns at knitty.com? They have some cute bags you might like to make for your projects. I recently inherited a fantastic empty fruit basket to put my skeins in. Can you believe the teacher was just going to throw the basket away? I couldn't believe my luck. :) I'd been using an old Victoria Secret bag... I think I traded up ;) Happy knitting!

I have enjoyed knitting since I was a little girl! Many of my students love knitting, too, both boys and girls. I keep knitting needles, crochet hooks, and skeins of yarn in my classroom for the children to use when they are done with their work. You'd be surprised at how motivating it is for completing work! I also found that I only had to teach a few children to knit - they now teach each other.

Happy knitting!

My mom taught me

My mom taught me about 5 years ago. Unfortunately, we only know how to knit scarves and blankets. I'd love to trade up to sweaters, but no one else at my school knits. We might try a class at Joann's.

Hi VaTeacher,

I have a mixed 4th, 5th, 6th grade class, so they are ranging from 9 - 12 years old.

I love it!

I learned how to knit last year. We had a B***** N Stitch group going, but it kind of fizzled out by January. I have done a few hats, a couple of scarves and am just finishing up a blanket. Thought I'd try a sweater next!

Knitting

I've been knitting since I was 12. I love it. I've had to take a break recently. I can't wait to start again. My 2 year old makes it tough to indulge.

Great topic!

I enjoy knitting in the winter months! :s) I am pretty basic- just scarves. But it's a nice no-brainer activity. I don't do anything fancy, but with all the great yarns out there, even plain old knit-stitch looks WOW with the cool yarns. My younger son wants me to knit him a sweater, but I'm afraid of the skill level, and the amount of time it would take me.

My older son's girlfriend told me the other day that her goal for Christmas break (she is in college) is for me to teach her to knit before she goes back to school.

I am interested in the knitting in the classroom, I've toyed with the idea, but haven't offered it yet. Thanks Chris for sharing your success with knitting in the classroom. I have 4th graders, a prime age for wanting to learn how to "do" things!

Happy knitting! Patches

I am a new knitter too. It is very relaxing. I am working on my first scarf. I wish I had more time to sit and knit.
A friend of mine volunteered to come in and teach any interested students to knit. The idea was that they would be able to knit when finished with their work. My principal told me that knitting needles are weapons and should not be brought to school. Can you believe that???

Knitting needles are allowed on aircraft. The US Government does not think they are weapons, and neither should anyone else. There are many soft plastic and wood varieties that wouldn't puncture skin even with a direct jab.
