Anyone in/know anyone in Houston?

I'm thinking about moving to Houston and was wondering how hard it is to get into a good district... if there's a great demand for teachers over there or not. Does anyone know? It could be in Houston or Katy or Sugar Land... I'm not particular.

One of my best friends

just moved to Katy in June. She's taught for 7 years. She had several interviews, but did not get a job. The district she wanted in apparently only hires first year teachers. Things did end up working out for her though - they had too many second graders and had to add a second grade class at the end of September. Everyone else had jobs, so she got hired! She got a raise over what she was making here in Oklahoma and is at her sons' school, so everything is perfect now...but it wasn't for awhile.

Only hiring first year teachers?

I wish that were the same over here - I'm in my 3rd year teaching and I can tell that everyone is always looking for more experienced teachers.

I'm debating between moving to the Houston area either over Christmas holidays or over the summer, I wonder if maybe I could start out as a sub.

I teach in Sugar Land (just got the job this summer) and it's quite a large district so a lot of new teachers are needed every year. After you have applied, contact the principals directly. I must have emailed all 42 elementary principals 3 or 4 times each before I got a job. It's all about being in the right place at the right time. It's a wonderful district and a great area to live in! Good luck! :)
