Applesauce ornaments

Has anyone done these? How did they turn out? Any thoughts/advice?
I would like to do them in gingerbread shapes for my gingerbread unit.
Do they smell good? strong?
Should I add something to make them smell more gingerbreadish? Nutmeg or ginger?

I did these a couple of years ago and they were adorable. They do smell a little strong but still good. One problem I had was that the kids wanted to taste the stuff! I kept catching them trying to sneak a bite! I couldn't get it through to them that there was glue in there! And the little boogers had just watched me put the glue in! You might add some nutmeg or ginger if you want them to smell more gingerbready.

Also, when I made them I found that I needed much more cinnamon than the recipe called for. I just had to keep adding until it was the right consistency, and it took a truckload.

I have made them and added flour to the apple sauce and cinnamon to get the right consistancy. They held up better than just using apple sauce and cinnamon. I would like to have the recipe with glue as well. Thanks!

Here's the recipe I used

Applesauce Cinnamon Christmas Tree Ornaments

¾ cup ground cinnamon
1T ground cloves
1 T ground nutmeg
2T white glue (like Elmer’s)
¾ c applesauce

In a medium size bowl combine all ingredients to make a dough. I use my hands to mix and squish it all together until it is a mildly wet dough. If it is too dry add another tablespoon of applesauce, if it is too wet add a little more cinnamon.

Roll the dough out between 2 pieces of plastic wrap until it is approx. ¼ inch thick. Using metal type cookie cutters, cut out designs. Our favorite cookie cutters were about 3 inches tall. Any taller and they seemed to large for the tree and any smaller were too hard to get a hole in them for the ribbon.

After you cut them out, lay them on a tray. Using a toothpick or straw make a hole in the top for hanging. Let them dry for 3 or 4 days turning once or twice a day. I turn them morning and night to insure they dry out well.

dollar stores

I found cinnamon at a couple of the dollar stores in our area--something to look into because it can be pretty expensive to get it in the grocery stores.

How much do the kids do? I was thinking of making it a center rotation. The group would follow the recipe to make the dough then they would each roll and cut their own ornament. I would be there too.
Is this how you did it or is there a better way?

I think making it a center rotation would work. A colleague at school says that she has let the kiddo's paint them after they dry. I've never tried that but it sounds like it would be cute. Good luck! :)
