Basic Adding and Subtracting

Help! I am currently teaching a 4th grade math class and these children are making careless mistakes with adding and subtracting. The group is a low group, however, these mistakes should not still be happening. Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem.

Addition and Subtraction

It might help if you do a few 'step by steps' with them on how to add and subtract. Use different coloured markers to demonstrate different operations. Using music and chants might also help. It might also help to use flashcards, and manipulatives as well. Having 'addition races' where teams compete to complete the same problem, as well as creating corsswords and 'numbersearches' might be a way to remedy the situation.
