Boyfriend's Mom Having Surgery

Hey everyone! As you might have remembered, I had taken a very needed personal day on Friday. I have to say I really enjoyed it. My boyfriend and I went to lunch at one of our favorite places and shopping at the mall and Target in Toledo. We definitely made a day of it. I had a quick question for everyone about tomorrow. My boyfriend's mom is having a stint put in her heart and it's an outpatient surgery. I was wondering if it would be a good idea for me to go with my boyfriend and his family when she has this done. The only thing is I have already missed 2 days this month (one sick day for a mental health day) and then Friday (personal day of course). This is also the last week of the 9 weeks and we have exams Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. My students will have their exams on Friday. Would it be a good idea to use a sick day tomorrow to go with them to the surgery, or should I just go to school tomorrow and have them call me during my free periods to let me know how things are going? I feel like I should go with them, but I also don't want to use up my sick days just in case I might still need them for a mental health day or even if I am sick. I still have 6.75 sick days left to use.

go!

Your comment "I feel like I should go" says it all. You know in your heart what you should do. Sometimes as teachers we worry too much about our students (its our job....we are great at putting them first!). Sometimes we need to put ourselves and our feelings first. Take care of yourself and your needs.

Your boyfriend and his mom will love you more for being there.

Still Kinda Undecided

I have all my stuff laid out on my desk in my classroom for tomorrow just in case I decide to call off. I think I should be there with his family, of course it's only going to be him and his mom since not sure if his dad took a vacation day, and his sisters can't go until the one gets done with school and the other gets done with work. I had thought about telling the principal that I needed to use up a sick day to be with his family while she has surgery, but didn't know how to explain it to him since I think it only covers immediate family and the teacher themself when it comes to using sick days. I would also hate to have to call him at 6 tomorrow morning but would like to call him now. Hopefully anyone else has an answer to this!

be careful

Be careful. If your contract spells out how sick days are to be used and you take a "sick day" for a purpose other than the specified use........ Well it just might come back to haunt you. It is better to be up front and talk to your principal.

Just a note, 6.75 days does not sound like very many sick days to me. How many can you accumulate?

180 Sick Days

There is a possibility to accumulate 180 sick days, depending on how long you are there. I have decided not to take the sick day just in case it violates the contract. I looked at it and it is just for immediate family unless you are married. I figured I would just let my boyfriend call me later to let me know how things are going. If I hadn't used any sick days yet I would have 9.25 sick days so far. I used one the day after Martin Luther King Day because of stomach flu and then one about 3 weeks ago for a mental health day.
