buzz words

I posted this in "job search", but realized that I really need for teachers that are in the field to help me. Here goes:

Well, I had a school call to schedule an interview with me. Of course, I was at the hospital with my ds. He was having his tonsils out.

I did call back and left a voice mail.

This is one of the top schools in our system and the state. I am very excited. They have openings in primary and intermediate. Since I have been out doing the sahm thing for 6 years, I know I'm behind on all of the lingo and buzz words. However, since leaving, I've taken classes in cultural diversity and guided reading/balanced literacy.

I'm trying to do some research into the 4block, shared reading.... I just don't want them to ask me a ? that stumps me. I've found that I usually use the skills and strategies they are asking about, but don't know the terminology.

What are some of the buzz words where you teach?

One comes to mind...

it's been differentiated (leveled) teaching for awhile, but now that is changing to "personalized" teaching. You take each child's strengths and weaknesses (including home life if applicable) and personalize their instruction as mush as possible. It goes a little deeper than differentiation.

words

I think these vary somewhat depending on what part of the country you are applying in, but here are some that come to mind: curriculum mapping, multiple intelligences, brain-based learning, Reading First, "qualified teacher", Everyday Math, responsive classroom, writing process, and the ones you looked into such as guided reading, 4block, six traits writing, and guided Math including the names of different Math manipulatives for hands-on learning. (Base 10 blocks, Geoboards, attribute blocks, etc.) Technology to use in the classroom such as the interactive whiteboard and developing a classroom website.

I think its ok to say that you don't know something if it comes up in an interview. Follow it with a positive statement about how you welcome any mentoring and staff development workshops to keep you up to date.

feeling better

I am familiar with much of what you've mentioned. Yeah!!! I've even taken some classes. Thank you so much.

One more question:

I'm very familiar with guided reading but I'm forgetting what shared reading is. I know I've used it, but just never knew what to call it. Is it whole group instruction using a piece of literature? Like reading a book with the entire class and then talking about passages that used foreshadowing.

Shared reading and more

Around here shared reading is just what you described. If in my part of Florida, you want to know about DIBELS, Reading First, adequate yearly progress, and individualized instruction.
