I am looking for some input from teachers (at any grade level) about safety guidelines in place at your school strictly for teachers. An example that comes to mind might be, "Use step stools instead of desks or tables to hang up decorations or any other materials." I want to put something together as the beginning of the school year nears as a reminder to teachers. This is a very busy time of year for you all and your safety should be a top priority. All input is welcome! I look forward to hearing from you all!

And you might consider

including with your example -- step ladders --- where step ladders are located.

Remember to vent your room -- window open or doors open when using something with fumes.

A little reminder to unplug glue guns when finished.

safe shoes

I was rearranging class room and a student chair fell off a desk and onto my foot. My toes hurt like crazy and when I looked down blood was spurting. The edge of the chair sliced the top of my toes. A trip to urgent care, a tetnus shop, and glued closed. Lesson learned, sandals are not work shoes.

How about

heavy boxes? My supplies get delivered to my room, but sometimes I need to move a box - get a custodian to help.

Get or bring help to lift and move heavy things.

Have basic first aid supplies handy...band-aids, antibiotic ointment etc. I always end up with at least one good burn from the glue gun.

Well, we've been told not to climb on desks, chairs or tables but haven't been provided a step ladder, so just a reminder that things need to be provided by the district in order for us to use them!

These are all great points! Keep them coming! Mhugs... Sorry to hear about your incident. Shoe style is definitely important in the classroom. The posts about heavy lifting go hand in hand with issues concerning the step stools. Is what it is we are doing so important that it can't wait for help or the right equipment? And those without access to step stools need them. Come together and stress the importance. They will decrease the risk of fall. Slips, trips, and falls are second only to motor vehicle accidents as cause of fatalities. Good point on the first aid kit as well.

A reminder to unplug ALL house-hold type items (Scentsy or the like, coffee pots, lamps, etc)

We have had a problem in the past with teachers leaving these items plugged in overnight.

The janitors don't always get to every room to check.

Kelly :)

Prohibited items

There are things we are not allowed to have in our rooms due to fire or burn hazards. They include plug in air freshners, coffee pots, toaster ovens, hot plates, etc. safety first!
