I need some ideas to help students with content vocabulary. Parents love the tried and true flashcard idea, but I need something different to make it enhance their vocabulary retention in science and social studies.

oops

I actually put this in the wrong grade. I'm in 5th. But I have them do the picture thing. It's really tough to get them to own their words.

vocab predictions

I did this lesson just the other day with my class. It seemed to go really well. First have students fold a piece of paper in thirds to make 3 columns. At the top of the 1st column write WORD, and PREDICTION (or infer), and the last write DEFINITION. We read the word in a sentence (there was acutally a short story that used all the vocab words. The students used the context clues to figure out what they thought the word meant and wrote their predictions. Next we looked the word up and wrote the actual definition. I took it a step further and had them color the space yellow if they infered correctly.
