We had data team for second grade and my class scores are the lowest. I knew my class was low but the lowest out of 12 second grade classes. I got to do something because other classes scored at around 70% in reading, my class scored 27%. How did I get the low low low class! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH:eek:

Well, there are only 4 second grade classes in my building....and I have the lowest as well. It's really discouraging, isn't it?

I feel your pain.... ;)

look at more data

Just wanted to encourage you to gather some more data (test scores from K/1, scope and sequence of work, DRA or other assessment scores). This will be helpful to share when you are having team level meetings or when your principal or others are questioning why the scores are so low. I say this to protect yourself, but even more so you will be able to really look for individual growth and compare kids to themselves rather than some high standard that they might not get to.

Thanks for the support

Yeah I have documented from day one with DRA, PRE and post tests for the 1st and 2nd nice weeks.I try to do what I can but honestly it's like I'm teaching some 2nd graders, some 1st graders and some kindergarteners. It's very difficult to pull from so many different resources and try to document and work with sooooo many different needs for my kids. I have two gifted students who have parents that are on me wanting more and more challenging work, I have students who read on level A/B and can barely write a sentence or two. Then the majority of the class is on like level F/ 10 and need to still review letter sounds, blends, and vowels but I know where they need to be at am getting very discouraged.

What about their improvement?

Take some time and analyze the improvements that each child has made from the beginning of the year until now and showcase that at data meetings! Your class might be the lowest, but if you can show individual improvement, I think that speaks volumes!!!

I taught low kids too

One of the things said at a workshop I went to for getting reading grant money was to have the children read to the paras in the building. One of the more successful schools had a time in the day where the kids would read to the paras. Well, we had no paras, but we had a secretary, bookkeeper, principal, nurse, alternative room, SPED teachers, and other students in the upper grades, (K-8 school). I went and asked these people if I could send kids to read to them. The principal loved the idea. The kids loved going around the building and reading to others. To them it was showing off their new skills. I don't have numbers, but I know the reading improved because of the practice they had. The self confidence grew too, because these caring adults always let the children know how great they were reading.
It is our nature to want to do well in things and when adults let the children know they are doing well, we work to improve ourselves.

I hope you find something that works for you. In an area where good things don't happen often, it is hard to get things going. Keep at it. I am sure you will get improvement out of the kids.
