Do you implement Reading Workshop?

I have been doing it this year for the first time, modeled after Sharon Taberski's "On Solid Ground," and Debbie Miller's "Reading With Meaning." I am loving it -- but I think I am the only teacher in my school actually doing it - so it's difficult to talk w/ other teachers about it.

Next year, supposedly, our entire school is going to be implementing it. I am happy that I have a head start and will actually be able to contribute what I have already done and witnessed.

I would love to chat with anyone else who is currently doing Reader's Workshop. Let me know! :)

comprehensive literacy

We are doing reading workshop as part of the complete package of comprehensive literacy. There are three parts that the teachers are responsible for implementing. Part I is the word study. We are using the DSA (developmental spelling assessment) from Word Journeys and material from Words Their Way. The other two parts, Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop, come from Guided Readers and Writers. This is the third year for implementation (reading first school). But the teachers were trained with the book Guided Readers and Writers three years earlier. We just didn't have the materials (leveled guided readers) to do justice to reading workshop. I also have the books that you mentioned.
Hang in there. I think you will really enjoy this because you will get to know the needs of your students.

reading workshop

I also do reading workshop. But, I don't feel that I do it justice. Our school is still stuck in the rut where you give this many vocab words, this many spelling words, and read a story, then ask literal questions. I am slowly trying to break out of this. Next year I would really love to delve in deeper. This is our principal's first year at our school so I was a little hesitant. I think I'll talk to her about changing next year though. What can it hurt.

I'd love to hear how you do your reading workshop.

Literacy

We work with Tufts University doing a balanced literacy model- Writing and Reader's Workshop and Word Study. I love Debbie Miller's book and am lucky to have a school dedicated to this approach and wonderful conversations. I am guessing you are nearby (your member name- I am in New Hampshire). That is great you are so excited about it. Lucy Calkins The Art of Teaching Reading is great as is Stratagies that Work for additional ideas.

Reading with Meaning

I absolutely adore Debbie Miller's Reading with Meaning. However, I am having trouble finding many of her suggested titles. Many of them are out of print :( My library at the school only has a few. Does anyone have any other picture book suggestions to go with Mental Imaging, Questioning or inferencing? Thanks!
