Ok, I'm clueless when it comes to this stuff. My DH told me he wants one for Christmas. He does not want me to spend a ton of money. He did say he wants to be able to download them to a hard drive. HELP ME!!!

No clue DH does it all. He built our own out of a computer that he bought off of ebay. We don't have to pay a monthly fee that way.

However, I will say DO IT! It is sooooo nice to watch TV on my time. With two little ones I would NEVER be able to catch my shows with out it.

My mom has hers through her DISH tv and I know a lot of cable companies offer the equipment for a $5 fee a month.

I haven't watched live tv in ages. I never even knew the World Series was going on... :D

Satellite?

If you have satellite you can upgrade to a receiver with a built in DVR. I'm sure some cable companies do the same. If not, you can get Tivo. They're not very expensive. I'm not sure about the transferring to a separate hard drive though.

Can't Live Without Ours

DVR - I think it stands for Digital Video Recorder, is part of our cable set up. As a busy mom of 2, it allows me to tailor what my children are watching. We tape shows we want the kids to watch (Arthur, Dragon Tales, Blues Clues, etc...) and when we allow them to watch TV, we can go back and have them watch it. It works a lot like a VCR but ;so much better.

It also allows DH and I to tape our fav show -CSI. There are weeks we cannot watch it so we DVR them. On Fri nites, DH and I have our own little date nite with popcorn or dinner and a show.

It is an additional fee to our cable and if we wanted to, we could "move them to tape", I think. We never have to, though. We simply just "save until told to erase" which is an option we can change the save time to. You do have a certain amount of space but it is plentiful. DH can record his football games and watch them without interrruptions from the kids and fast forward commercials (or boring parts).

Like I said, we love ours and can't imagine life without it.

What your husband might also be referring to TiVo. That I'm not familiar with, sorry. I do know it works similarly to DVR (and I think came out first and is sold in stores) but that's all I really know.

Hope it was helpful,
Shark

I have a DVR recorder with my satellite receiver. I can tape to the DVR to watch later but can't put on separate tapes like a VCR does. I love being able to tape and watch later though. It costs about 6 dollars a month after you purchase the receiver. It's worth it.

We have TIVO. I bought it for my DH for Valentine's day last year at Best Buy. They had a deal- the DVR was $199, and you got a rebate after 3 months of service for $200! So it is basically free, then I pay $12 a month for service. It is amazing! We could also subscribe to a DVR through our cable company (Time Warner). There is a way with TIVO that you can burn things to DVD- but I think you have to buy some other piece of equipment to do that. We just leave things we like a lot on our TIVO indefinitely. Another thing I love about TIVO (or any DVR) is that while I am watching live tv, I can pause, rewind or go in slow motion. So if the phone rings- I just pause the tv while I answer the phone!

Tivo

Couldn't live w/o it. Check around, but Target usually sells it around Christmas for 150 or so, and they usually have a rebate offer that covers the entire price. My husband got me one 2 years ago w/ this deal, and we bought one for his parents last year for the same deal. Both times- Target.

Thanks!

I appreciate all the responses!!! I went out with DD today and I think I'm going to get a Tivo. Going to wait for all the big sales to hit and that may mean getting up at 3am to shop on black Friday. DH doesn't ask for much and does so much for me that I would sacrifice my sleep for him!!!
