I need to get my students doing individual, short presentations in front of the class to get them more comfortable with speaking in front of their peers. Any ideas? I teach 3rd.

Teach the class. I recently had my students work in small groups to teach one of the vocab words after we worked on the words. They used the board to write the word, give the example sentence from the story, definition, and then a picture from the story or explain it further. The kids had fun.

Hey Ms. J,
Some topics I would suggest for getting started with presentations are having students pick something that interests them, for example; favorite animal, hobbies, extracurricular activity, or subject. I found that our third-grade class loves using Pebble Go as a research tool. Pebble Go provides many articles for different topics. If you pick a category, they can decide on a subcategory. One that we worked on in our class for social studies was "Jobs in the Community" Students selected various jobs like librarian, electrician, and teachers to share more about how beneficial these jobs are in our community.

What about a "How To" demonstration?
How to make a sandwich; How to plant a flower; etc.
I like all the suggestions but I particularly like the “how-to” idea.

I’ll also add poetry unit: limericks, haiku, biography, couplet, etc. I used a simple unit from TPT geared for 1st graders because it had writing templates. I simply raised the standard regarding Vocab, punctuation, etc to make it 3rd grade material. It was a simple fun engaging way to introduce different types of poetry.

I also taught 3rd and I started with the opening or leading of our morning meeting to get my students comfortable with sharing. We’d meet on the carpet and then a student would lead the pledge, class rules, news, map, question of the day, etc. I also gave opportunities to share their journal writing or simply a sentence or two (up to a paragraph). I found these smaller opportunities helped a lot for when the time came for the “bigger” presentations.
