first grade teacher

Our school has just adopted a curriculum that has many gaps. It is up to the first grade team to redo the curriculum and make it mesh into our current curriculum. Does anyone teach first grade by using units or do you go strictly by your basals and literacy program?

We were just wanting to cover all options before we started working in depth.

themes? basals?

I tend to teach both basal and units. I myself get bored with just one or the other, but I think they are both important. When I am doing a unit, we still do our basal, but the unit is the main thing I teach with. Our school is so far behind, no teaching structured reading, I would lose to many children.
