One way to increase fluency is to let students listen to a story on tape. Then I choose a paragraph, page or passage for them to practice. I have them listen to that portion again and then tape themselves. This not only increasses fluency but will help will intonation and expression. They love to hear themselves and if they don't think they did the best job they could they can tape it again. When they are finished, I listen to the tape and give further suggestions and praise.

Reader's theater

Reader's theater is a great way to increase fluency and it also is a great motivator. My at risk readers love reader's theater and beg for it every day. Here are some sites where you can download and print free scripts.

I use these scripts a lot and the kids always love them. We do THe legend of Lightning Larry every year.

We just got done doing Piggie Pie and Bad Case of the Stripes. THe kids have a blast with it.

Fluency Practice

I don't know if you are using a basal series or not, but if you are, they may have an intervention book which may have fluency practice passages. I use O.C., and there is an intervention manual that has tons of one or two page fluency practice sheets. I heard H.M. also has something similar. Good luck!

Questions on DIBELS

Exactly how do you use this site? I had heard of "DIBELS" but never knew what they were talking about. Can you elaborate a little?

Could a teacher use the passages to have students practice fluency? Could a teacher use this as an assessment tool?

Please advise. Thanks

using DIBELS

We use DIBELS as an assessment B/M/E of school. Every two weeks we use the progress monitoring sheets found on the same website for the students that are at or some risk. The students should be increasing their fluency 1.5 to 2.5 words per week. Our goal is to have our students reading minimum 90 wpm with adequate comprehension. We use a rubric for expression also. The teachers work really hard to have the students read the sheets as readers not speed reading. As a reading first school we are required to use DIBELS. There are fluency stories on reading a-z but that is a subscription. If you are using leveled guided readers choose a book on the student's level or drop back one level for fluency success.
We use this speed as a guide with the book levels (DRA)- 16 - 44/wpm, 18 - 52/wpm, 20 - 68/wpm, 24 - 79/wpm, 28 - 90/wpm. Hope this might help.

Fluency help

The best thing I have found to do with struggling readers to build fluency are readers theaters. They are great practice. The kids really enjoy them. The parts are levelized, so you can use them during your guided reading groups. They come in fiction and nonfiction plays. Frank shaffer publications makes a great book of them for about $25.00. Good luck!!!
