running record frequency

I do a running record about once a month. It would be great to do it more frequently, but I really need the time to actually give instruction. For the most part, I adjust instruction in between as I see a need based on observation when working with the students.

running record

I aim for about twice a month. It helps me understand their needs, but also gives me a lot of info for evaluating purposes. Between running records, vocab testing and hearing their homereading once a month I feel I have a really good handle on their reading level.

homereading

Home reading books are sent home for them to read aloud to a parent. They are levelled, and we deliberately send books that are below their reading level so they can work on expression and fluency. It should take 5 - 10 minutes a night. All children are expected to exchange their homereading approx twice per week. Children whose parents can't or won't participate are matched up with a school volunteer 2 - 3 days a week so they get some practice too.

We bought our home reading books from Nelson. The package has 3 copies of every book, about 15 different titles per level, 5 levels. The few children who complete all 5 levels get to choose a daily story from the school library.

All children in our system in K to 3 participate in some kind of home reading program. The K books are generally photocopied and very vocab controlled and repetitive. Most Grade 3's (and high 2's I think) choose their own stories from the library or their own collections. Parents sign the sheet to show the story has been mastered.

I do them

about every two months. In Sept., Nov., Jan, March and May. THis gives me time to test all 26 of my children and then actually teach them for a while to try to make some gains. THen I retest to make sure the child is growing. If not, I change the structure of my teaching for those children.

running records

i do about 1 a week. Every day when I meet with the children for guided reading groups, I do a rr on one child. Since there are less than six kids in each group, I am able to get to each at least once a week. I am lucky enough to have title one support in my classroom, which increases my ability to do this, while a title one teacher meets with another reading group.
