Getting a raise?

SC

I am just curious how many of you get a raise and how frequent they are. At my previous school I got one every year (I was there 2 years), but my new school told me that even though they want to, they can't afford it. I told some friends of mine who work in public school, and they freaked out and said I should quit and that teachers should get a raise every year. I'm now a little worried that I'll be stuck at this salary for a while.

been there

I've been there. At my school there are tuition increases for teacher raises, then we don't get anything or when we do it's 2%. When you make $10,000 less than the public schools, 2% is like an insult. Several of the teachers who have children at the school are actually making LESS because tuition went up, but the raise wasn't enough to cover the difference!!! As long as you are happy there, then the money shortage won't hurt as much.

Raises

I've been at my school for 4 years and each year we have gotten a raise. But this year we won't. Our school was affected by Hurricane Katrina and since we are a Catholic, there is no money for raises. I am just thankful I have a position. Some schools here laid off teachers because enrolledment is down.

HEY SC congrats on the doorprize!!!

We get a very little , ok like tiny every year. Last year our insurance changed so my raise was 8 whole dollars every two weeks. it is a joke but i love what i do and love teaching in a catholic school so i stay for th ekids and for my peace of mind, that has to be your decision, you have to decide why you are teacing at a private school and if your decision is worth the lower pay and can you afford to live on the lower pay especially if you are single and where you live.

and again, congrats on the doorprize, go claim is before it gets away !

I must have missed my chance at the doorprize. I probably wouldn't have even known about it if it weren't for your telling me congrats :) Oh well...

I definitely want to stay at the school, and fortunately my husband makes enough for me to stay. I was just wondering what went on elsewhere. I'm also in LA, and I know things were affected by the hurricane, but I really would like more $$.

To Miss C

Are you willing to share what your salary is? I'm just curious to know how it compares to where I am without getting a raise.

Sure!

Currently, it's $20,500. Next year, I guess it'll be @20,900. We're paid every two weeks year round. I have a part-time summer job (total pie job - receptionist for a place that's very un-busy. Nice switch) to supplement.

Thanks

Thanks for being willing to share your salary. I tutor a couple of kids after school just to make some extra cash, and I think I'll do it over the summer as well.

Kid's tuition big plus

At our school teachers' children go for free, which also includes books and registration fees. The only thing I have to pay for are fees for my children being involved in sports. That is like $8000+ money that is tax free...a huge benefit for me. On my "intent to return" letter I turned in this week, I made sure to say a big THANK YOU for this benefit. When my sister taught at our school a long time ago, she had to pay for her kids to go there.

We also get raises in relation to number of years, amount of education, stipends for extra duties...that sort of thing. I think they pay 1/2 of any educational classes that we pursue to further our degrees.

We have had a really big enrollment shift down (due to a number of chemical plants closing in our area) so I really don't think that we will get much, if anything more at all. We got a $200 bonus at Christmas, which was given by parents as an offering to the teachers/staff.

Be grateful you have a job! It was announced yesterday that our school is closing and we'll be out of jobs for next year. The parents are outraged and say they'll find the money to keep it open, but I'm not very hopeful anymore. I've been on the web all night looking for information on starting a very small private school. I know nothing about legalities and any other requirements, so I'm a little overwhelmed. This is motivated by parental requests. Anyone who might know where I can start, I hope you'll share. Do not want to make it a Christian school, just private.

I am begining to think I make good money . .

I earn 28K and get a 1K raise each year.
I get 100.00 gift at Catholic Schools Week from Home and School

Hi kinda new to the post as far as responding. It's always nice to come here to the boards and read. It lets me know I'm not alone. Surprisingly enough, its the knowing of this fact that allows me to carry on espescially this year, which has thus far been my worst. After the so-called raise that my school couldnt afford(maybe after they built a new bldg. addition this summer and then added two floors to the top, and then bought 24 brand new computers), yeah I guess they couldnt spare me the extra $1000, what with all the other important things to buy, who has time to worry about teachers salary, I mean hey, you know "None" of us need the money..............
