Getting in from wait list

My cousin is starting to receive decision letters from colleges. She got accepted into her safety school, but got wait-listed at her top choice. Do you have any experience with this? Is it worth it for her to deny her safety school and get on the wait list? What do you think her chances are of being accepted?

I wouldn't deny the school she got into. I think you can put a deposit down and then if she gets into the wait listed school, she loses the deposit. Granted, I have been out of college for 5 years, but I Think my deposit was only $100.00.

I wouldn't want to deny the safety school and then take the chance of not getting into the wait list.

I have to agree. It is very risky to give up a sure thing on an unknown.

Would it be possible for her to attend her safety school for a year (or even a semester) and then begin her sophomore year at her first choice?

I am probably over simplifying.
