I want to order "First Days of School" from the internet and there is a deal if I order more books. Can anyone tell me the book/s that has helped you the most, or a must have for first year/ future teachers... i'm just going to start student teaching but I want to know what books really help in terms of first time teaching, classroom mangement, anything!

Book

This is a great book. I took a Harry Wong course several years ago. I use so many of his ideas in my class.

I read a book by LouAnne Johnson called Teaching Outside The Box (How To Grab your Students By Their Brains) which I found to be both practical for new and experienced teachers and a good read. This author has written many books about teaching and especially about her experiences working with at-risk high school students. She also wrote a book called My Posse Don't Do Homework which was the inspiration for the movie Dangerous Minds, again about her experiences working with at-risk students.

Wow - that's a hard one - I think the Harry Wong is by far the best book I used when I was starting teaching. I also like the Essential 55 (forget the author). If you knew what grade you were teaching (or student teaching), I would highly recommend the Mailbox Superbook for that grade. I LOVE those, and still use them every year.

"First Days of School" and . . .

I totally agree that "First Days of School" is a good one. I would also highly recommend "Teaching with Love & Logic" by Jim Fay & David Funk.

Classroom Management

I found Fred Jones "Tools for Teaching" the best book for teaching junior and senior high. He covers areas that the Wong book doesn't. I felt the Wong book was mainly for elementary school teachers. Reading Fred's book is almost like reading some of Augustus's posts. Lots of humor along with very good classroom management skills.
