grading 2nd grade writing

Hello! Would love any info on how you grade writing assignments, ex. stories, that your 2nd graders complete. Do you grade for a certain lesson taught, like structure or complete sentences, or make a rubric? I always struggle with this!

6 traits rubrics

I am attempting to grade my second graders based on the 6 traits rubrics. I don't always grade for all traits, I may pick one to focus on and assess their pieces based on that specific trait only. I do assess all 6 traits when it is used as a benchmark piece. There are some terrific rubrics in the book 6+1 Traits of Writing for the Primary Grades by Ruth Culham. It has been very handy! Hope this helps!

I would also suggest 6 traits. If you are teaching a specific skill, I would only grade that (sequencing). I love 6 traits and the rubrics that you can use, but you should teach the traits before you grade them on it.

Could you please share with me a sample lesson that you do with your second graders. I am trying to do more writing but I feel like we just write random things. I need help in how this is suppossed to look in the second grade. Thanks
