help with guided reading

I need help with center ideas. We (all school) are supposed to do guided reading and centers. I am having a hard time getting centers for 5th grade k-2nd level that students will not think are babyish. Now my next thing is I want students to be able to self check their center items so that I do not have 100 extra papers to look through. Not only is the sped department supposed to get this up and running, we are all being required to go through wilson reading level I certification training. I am very overwhelmed with paperword, college courses and "new implementations", I would like to make this as easy possible and still be effective. Any help, ideas and suggestions would be welcomed!
