I need help!

I'm looking for a new classroom management plan. I need help! I have changed my behavior tracking system once this school year. I have a very challenging class this year. I teach 2nd grade boys and nothing is working. I am just about ready to pull my hair out. I have tried positive rewards, taking away privileges, contacting parents, and so on. My students act like they don't care about anything. I don't know what else to do. I now use cards--each student starts on green; yellow-warning; orange-miss half recess or free time; pink-parent contact; after pink-office referral, which doesn't work because they pat them on the shoulder, reminds him to be good, and he returns back to my class. Any ideas is appreciated!

Have you ever tried Randy Sprick's CHAMPs management program? I've been using it for several years with my middle school kids and it works great. The program is adaptable for all ages. It works on the principal of teaching the kids expectations for every activity so no one has to guess what needs to be happening in the classroom.

I feel your pain

I am teaching Kinder. and I all my boys are out of control. I have tried everything you have and the same thing happens when I send them to the office..... they get to play games, on the computer and color. There is no support. I am trying a whole new plan starting tomorrow. I have looked up every website I could find online. I am going to give every child a sheet that really breaks down the day into little incriments, then for every little thing that they accomplish (say, morning work, raise hand, sit quietly for RR, etc.) they can earn a sticker. At the end of the day they will add up their sticker and then I will have a reward system for the different # of stickers earned (my great girls will always get a reward) as for the boys, hopefully they will see that even if they only get ONE sticker, maybe they will remember what they did to get that sticker and then try to get more... we'll see - I am in a funk llike you. I have changed discipline plans so many times to find something that works. I truely believe that if their is NO support from the office that you are kind of beating your head against a wall!! I am just looking to get through the year without any more comments about my class from the office. it needs to look good from the outside too - what ever works!!!

Maddie, please let me know how your new plan works. My last strategy I tried a treasure basket where the students earned stickers for good behavior and when each student earned 5 stickers he could select an item out of the basket (once a week). I really don't know what else to do

Out of control

Similar to maddie's reply: we had a young friend in a similar situation. Off track all during the day, disruptive, talking out, generally out of control. A wise counselor hit on the solution for him. Break his day into little chunks and reward him for staying on task all throughout the day. If he participated in calendar, he got a sticker. If math went well, he got a sticker. If he worked hard in computer lab, he got a sticker. If he made it through recess, sticker. Etc. It worked wonders for him. Ending the day with a card full of stickers was a very positive thing! Before, there was no way he could make it all day, so he never earned the end-of-the-day sticker reward. But he could make it to 9:30, and then to 10:45 and then to lunch, and so on. It was a lot of work for the teacher to attend to, but it was worth it. As the year progressed, he did too, and she changed his daily mini-goals. By the end of the year, he was in line with the other students of getting a sticker at the end of the day.
