jobs in PA, MD, NJ, VA???

Can anyone give me information on the current job market for teachers in the northeast? My husband and I will probably move in the next year. Our families are in Pennsylvania, and we can't afford real estate in CA where we currently live. We are looking to move to Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, or Virginia. I want to have an idea of what to expect. I have ten years of experience, and I have my national board certification. Any information or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

job

I moved out here last year. There are jobs in Maryland. I applied online before the move. They reimbursed me some (I flew with my husband) to come out for an interview, paid my hotel and gas expenses. Then we looked around for a couple of days afterwards. I was hired on the spot with my choice of school. It was really nice knowing I had a job-signed contract and-all for my flight back.
I heard its harder to find one in Pennsylvania and Virginia. I know new teachers from Penn. moved here. Housing is expensive here but can't be as bad as in CA.
Good luck!!

Thanks for replying to my message. What part of MD are you in? Do you work for an urban district or suburban?

The job market for teachers is not great here. There are not that many openings here.

You have to be extremely lucky. Right place at the right time or know someone. There are plenty of talented people subbing because they can't get hired.
Many of the districts around here are very political. (I still wonder sometimes how I got hired!!! I was the token non-relative that year)

follow up question for PA

Marie, Triana and Mrs. B:

Do you happen to know if circumstances are the same in the eastern part of PA? That is the only area of PA we are considering, since our families are in the Philadelphia area and I'd like to be within two hours travel time of them.

Thanks for your responses!

I don't have any direct info, but from discussions with our supt. PA in general has an over abundance of teachers for the openings available. Due to the fact there are so many colleges in PA that focus on teaching.
I would say that the Philly area would be the same. There are a number of large and small universities in the area.
Wish I had better info.
Perhaps you would have a better chance in some of the inner city schools with the experience that you have-you would definitely be considered "highly qualified" with national board certification. I would get apps in now and post your resume on "PA educator".

I agree that there are probably too many teachers in all of PA not just southern PA. We have many excellent colleges and universities for teacher prep. Unofrtunately, that gives us many teachers. Another way to look for infor may be to look for the particular county on line. You might get statistics from there. Also check with the chamber of commerce in those areas.

When I graduated from Penn State two years ago, the majority of my classmates were either from the Pittsburgh region or the Philly region. There weren't job openings in either area then, and I don't think much has changed.

Check paeducator.net That is the website where you can post your resume and search for openings, and its the ONLY place where you can submit your application to many districts...many won't accept a paper application anymore.

Unforunately...my account was newly reactivated. :(
