Listening/speaking

A little help from my teacher friends? I was wondering when during the school year do you teach listening and speaking? I'm assuming right away, but I would like your advice.
Right away in the first week of school?

Listening and speaking

will be practiced every day, all year!!!

Listening is worked into our launching unit with our partner work. We take a lot from Debbie Miller's "Reading With Meaning" and "Teaching with Intention" about conversations. Kathy Collins has a section in "Growing Readers" that's called "Talk Amongst Yourselves" where she outlines mini lessons and ideas for introducing this to kids. The section heading are:
Good talker are good listeners
The importance of understanding in conversations
The characteristics of good conversations

We teach it at the beginning of the year and practice all year long.
