I thought that there was only 1 library book that I had checked out from my public library missing - but now I find out that there are 2 - what would preteacher friends suggest about asking students to pay for the missing books if they are not found? I know that they are somewhere in the classroom - already done the desk check twice - I am thinking of sending a note home after break.....please help- thanks!

What I did
Same thing happened to me. I did send a note home. I also expressed my sorrow to the kids- I would no longer be able to check out books to bring to school. And the books I had in the class library were going to be policed like crazy.
They were upset - guilt can be a good motivator - and on their own they came up with a plan to check their rooms, backpacks, cubbies, etc. Then a group of kids came forward and said if it couldn't be found that we should divide the cost of the book among all the students in the class.
It was found - rather quickly - in someone's "extra" backpack that they only used once in a while.

I think that I will send a note home on Monday and then I will contact the library - which is difficult right now because it is closed due to relocating to a new building - one of the books was due 11/11 and the other is due 1/2/08.....so I will need to wait to contact them - I also thought I returned them but that can not even be checked as the library is closed......so I will wait.

I lost one too
A few years ago I lost a library book. They were nice and renewed it several times for me while it was missing. I sent home a flyer, checked the school library, checked with the local library. It turned up a year later in the school library after I paid for it
I can renew library books on the computer. Maybe you could renew your book on-line. The library in my town is closing for lighting next month. We are offering amnesty for late books around that time. (I am on the board of trustees so I am up on the policies.)
Good luck finding the book.

keep a receipt
If you end up paying for the missing books keep a receipt from the library. Many libraries will reimburse you if you find the book later. Maybe for awhile town library books should be kept near your desk and kids should sign them out when using them.

We don't reimburse if the book is found. I donated it back to the library since it was a good book about dinosaurs.
