I am looking for some fun, creative ideas to go along with the theme of Martin Luther King, Jr. Anything would be appreciated...art projects, center ideas, etc. Thanks!

Maybe for a center idea students could create a poster that promotes peace. MLK was all about peace and unity among all people. Students could make a mobile that has ways they could help promote peace. I am not sure the grade level they could write a report on his life. Or an essay on how they can act toward others to promote peace.

I can't take the credit for this one, because I read it on a yahoo group I belong to, but I think its a great idea.........

A Martin Luther King Jr. activity:
Last year I wrapped up 3 boxes in 3 different ways ... one in very plain
wrapping paper, one in a brown bag, and one in beautiful gift wrap with a gold bow and curling ribbon. We had a discussion on which one the kids would like to open and why. We then opened all three and discovered that they all contained the same thing ( I had stickers). We talked about Martin Luther King's beliefs that all people were the same - no matter what they look like on the outside - just like our gifts. The kids seemed to understand this "concept" - and talked about it several times in the days that followed.

We focus on writing about our dreams because of his "I Have a Dream" speech. The current issue of Instructor magazine had a list of the best new books in African-American history. This is the Dream (grades K and up) by Diane Z. Shore sounded good. The description said that the rhythmic verse of this civil rights chronology will capture young readers instantly. Use the books powerful illustrations to inspire students to create their own cool collages. Unfortunately, because it's a 2005 copyright, my local library doesn't have it in the system yet, and the $15.99 price isn't in the budget. They also cite The Bus Ride That Changed History (about Rosa Parks) by Pamela Duncan Edwards (grades K-3) and Freedom on the Menu (about four black men who refused to be turned away from a whites-only lunch counter) by Carol Boston Weatherford (grades 2-5).

No exciting activities...

but we do a writing activity about I have a dream...for community, state, and country. There is a GREAT book writing by his sister called "My brother Martin." We also watch a movie about boys going back in time and meeting Martin. It is wonderful and the kids really like it. It has Whoopie Goldberg in it. It is in the current Really Good Stuff catalog - I can't remember the name of it.

MLK video

The movie you're thinking of probably is Our (or My?) Friend Martin and it is enormously popular with all age groups. Blockbuster used to rent it free as a community service.

Martin Luther King activity

I just wanted to thank you for posting this. I did this yesterday with my preschoolers. I used 3 gift bags each with candy canes in them. First we listened to and sang "I am special". Then I talked about the bags and reminded them how although we all observed different holidays last month, we'd decided we were all the same. We opened the gift bags after they chose the one they'd like (no one chose the ugly grocery bag <g>) and while they ate the candy canes, I read a book about everyone in the world. I've just forgotten the name of the book but I can check next week if anyone's interested.

It went really well.

This is The Dream author

Dear NJ Teacher,

I am one of the authors of This is The Dream and I want to thank you for recommending the book on the PROTEACHER discussion board. I also see that it isn't in your budget. I think I might be able to do something about that. :-) (Can you go to mywebsite at www.dianezshore.com and
e-mail me?)
I know the MLK holiday is past, but because the focus of the book is about the events and followers of the civil rights movement, it is a great tie-in to Black History month. You might also be interested to know that Scholastic has chosen it as a featured book for their bookfairs and they have created three different guides/handouts to go along with the book. (They make terrific teaching materials!)

1) Read-Aloud Family Event guide
2) Student Reading Activity guide
3) Teacher Lesson Plans

Here's the link:

Thanks again! Diane Z. Shore
