Mult. Timed Tests

I don't know if this is wise but do you think your 3rd grade students would enjoy it if you (the teacher) also took a timed test with them? The kids could try to beat you and see if they could get done before you? I wonder if this would motivate some to learn their facts? Has anyone ever done this or something like it?

I do

I've done this before just for fun! I've taken lots of tests with my kids for fun. The funniest part is when I go through and check papers and find a couple mistakes I've made!!! :>) I don't know about motivation - it may frustrate them sometimes, too???? I just do it for fun on occasion.

I do one about mid-way. I don't ever grade it when they are watching, but eight years I've only missed one problem and I bet their scores by double. It really impresses the students.

On Occasion

I do it occasionally. Especially when we fist start. I make it a point to tell them that I learned my facts in 3rd grade and to this day I can still remember them all with automation. For most of my students it puts me in their shoes when they realize I had to do them too. Plus its just fun to see the shock on their faces. lol

timed test

I have taken many with the kids. I set the benchmark and they love to see if they can beat me. Even my former students let me know how they are doing. My record is 100 in 1 minute and 33 seconds. The former students still bring it up and always ask if anyone has beaten me. It is a great motivating thing to master and try to beat the teacher plus it keeps my mind active.

do it all the time

We do daily timed tests, and I grade Friday's. Sometimes I'll take the tests with the kids and they're amazed I can go so fast. What they really love is when we grade the fact drills. We go over each row orally, and I repeat the answers at the end of the row. I read them out loud using a BLANK fact drill so they know my answers come from mastery of facts. They think it's pretty cool.

Actually we do daily timed tests and go over it after we are done. I grade them on Friday. I've just never done it with them. I got a book that has the facts on a race track (it's kind of cute). I thought about once a week or so doing that book with them so it's different from their Mad Minute. I thought it would be neat that they would know by the look of the sheet if it's one we do together or the one they do alone.
