Diversity

Dear Dorothy,
When searching for cultural ideas and/or activities for your students it is very important not to use a tourist approach. The first thing you might want to do is to find out what does your classroom look like? Who are the students in your class and where do they come from? You might need to do some research on their culture. Once you have done your homework then incorporate simple activities that all children can relate to. You might want to look into the book The Antibias Curriculum for some ideas.

I just did a theme on the olympics and I have a few children ,in my class ,that are from other cultures as well.
One thing that I did was focus on the flags of their countries. The parents were some proud of that.
They were pretty easy to make and the children did a great job on them . We posted them on the bulletin board and by the end of the week the children could name them and kept making them over and over.
The parents loved to come into the classroom and see their flag.

We also had the parents bring in chopsticks so the children had a chance to eat lunch with them and try the skill of eating rice.
The child from china would laugh at us and showed us how to use them.
Another girl from Korea came to daycare dressed in her outfit from their culture. The children loved it, and she was quite proud.
We practiced some words from their cultures as well as talked about the different ways of doing things. Such as sitting on the floor instead of chairs for supper.
I hope this helps with a few ideas, We had fun with it.

I like the idea of the country flags and also having children dress in their culture clothes.

I will try it.

Culture Night

My club and I are holding a Culture Night and we need some ideas about some performances that we could put on. We want to display variouse cultures and ethnicities. We are high school students with many talents that vary from singing, dancing, acting and among us we speak at least four or five different languages. Does anyone have any suggestions?
