National Pi Day

Has anyone ever celebrated National Pi Day, and done fun activities to educate students about the symbol Pi? I saw a website saying that National Pi Day is March 14 and I thought that it might be cool to do different things with the topic. Some of you may even have gifted and talented students who are being exposed to it.

Any thoughts?...

PI ideas

Hi CU,

I'm on break right now, so I don't have access to my PI folder at school.

I've done numerous activities with my 6th grade students....This site is filled with some great ideas (grade level indicated):

My students especially liked making a PI necklace, and they proudly wore them for weeks thereafter :)

Have fun!

A Really Fun book on the subject is

Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi by Cindy Neuschwander. I read it on Family Math Night and had my room decorated like a castle with a drawbridge, etc. The kids loved the story. :)

Carrie,

What age students did you read the story to? At what age should kids start learning about Pi?

Hi,

Our school has a whole celebration dealing with Pi, but we don't do it on this date--we call it Pi night, and that is the night we hold our annual math fair. Each child in 5th grade designs a math fair project in categories such as math history, line design, math careers, number theory, and so on. We also have a play based on Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi, a Pi number contest to memorize the digits of Pi (the current record holder is about 100) and many games and activities such as a moon pie walk, Pi face painting, and poems based on Pi. It is a truly fun learning experience--we ask that parents/families donate a pie of their choice, and since the last line of the play is everyone eat pie, we serve it then. The winners of the math fair are announced, and prizes distributed. Hope you enjoy!

I had a contest with my 6th graders to see who could memorize the most numbers of pi.

We (I) also called several pizza places to get prices and sizes of their cheese only pizzas and the students had to see which local pizza place had the best price per square inch.

good luck

We have the kids bring in pies to each while we work on Pi numbers. One year, a student brought in a "pumpkin pie" that was a piece of pumpkin shell in a foil pie pan with the Pi symbol carved into it.
