Ok guys- this year our Assistant Principal has "given" us our schedules. It is terrible with 20 and 30 minute slots everywhere. I do Reader's and Writer's Workshop and need help fitting those in.
Here it is- Things written in are mandatory:

8:00- 8:40 Writer's Portfolio (from SMART schools- April Decessare?)

8:40-10:10 ??????? (ELA time- for whatever structure we want- this time is to be integrated with Common Core AND science and social studies)

10:10- 10:40 Recess (mandatory at this time)

10:40-11:00 ?????

11:45-12:15 (Mandatory math time... but come on SERIOUSLY this is all I have????) I want to do math workshop.

12:15-1:00 Specials- like Art, Music, etc

12:55-1:15 ?????

1:15-2:00 SWAP (this is mandatory time also) We switch up kids based on ablilites and teach lessons to their level. This is also a time for RTI pull outs.

2:00- 2:30 ????

2:30-2:45 AFternoon meeting and dismissal.

Everyone- please help. Tomorrow is our 8th day and I need to plan lessons NOW.

TIA!

This is how I would split it up:

8:00- 8:40 Writer's Portfolio (is that the same as Writer's Workshop? If not, could you integrate the two?)

8:40-10:10 Daily 5/Guided Reading/Reader's Workshop-It shouldn't be too difficult to integrate social studies and science through literature and independent work.

10:10- 10:40 Recess

10:40-11:00 Social Studies/Science-If you're integrating these subjects in the morning during your reading block, I would think that you would need a separate time to focus just on them. You could also have discussions and wrap up what was taught in the morning. Or the morning work could involve the students gaining some background knowledge prior to the mini-lesson that is taught during this time. (Am I even making sense???)

11:45-12:15 Math-Perhaps you could do your warm-up, mini-lesson, and introduce workshop expectations for the day

12:15-1:00 Specials- like Art, Music, etc

12:55-1:15 Math-Begin workshop activities

1:15-2:00 SWAP

2:00- 2:30 Math-Continue workshop activities

2:30-2:45 Afternoon meeting and dismissal

I know your math would be really chopped up this way, but I agree that the 30 minute slot is NOT enough time!

My suggestion...

8:00- 8:40 Writer's Portfolio (from SMART schools- April Decessare?) I am also assuming this is similar to a writer's workshop.

8:40-10:10 This is where I would meet with small groups/center time/ word work, etc. I think science and social studies can be easily integrated in with books, worksheets, etc.

10:10- 10:40 Recess

10:40-11:00 I would start math here by reviewing concepts and introducing new concepts.

11:45-12:15 Math workshop

12:15-1:00 Specials- like Art, Music, etc

12:55-1:15 Science/ Social Studies

1:15-2:00 SWAP (this is mandatory time also) We switch up kids based on ablilites and teach lessons to their level. This is also a time for RTI pull outs.

2:00- 2:30 Science/ Social Studies

2:30-2:45 AFternoon meeting and dismissal.

Thanks :)

Writer's portfolio stinks. It isn't like Writer's Workshop. We give the children a topic to write to everyday which is already set in a binder we give them. Some people call it writing across the genre's. We do walk around and do "quick conferences."
