We are doing a school-wide ancient egypt theme next year to celebrate the King Tut exhibit in Chicago. Any ideas on room decorations for our theme?

I need a back to school board, classroom helpers board, reading area name and decorations, etc.

Thanks!

Translate names

This site has a name translator: http://www.discoveringegypt.com/e-name.htm

If you make a master sheet of the alphabet, the kids could look at it and translate their own names. Of course, you could also use the translator to title your board and do many more things like write messages, etc. Another good site I've visited is Reeder's Egypt. Look for it on Google.

How about a helper board with jobs that are like those in Egypt I.e. a charioteer for the one who runs messages to and from the office, scribe for the homework display or recordkeeper, tax collector for milk money or lunches...? Royal Scribe Library Corner? Pharoah's Reading Nook? Library on the Nile? As for decor, if the students are old or skilled enough have them create decor, if not then you: sarcophagus images, scarab beetles for nameplates, Egyptian animals of the time period, crocs, BB trimmed in golds and jewel tones to give a sense of regal splendor. Images could be fun cartoon or realistic. Have fun! :) It's a great theme for the year. I'd check out the museum site for any ideas too.

This is such a fun unit. You could study something different about Egypt each day of the week, or extend the unit as long as it needs to be. One day you could study food, clothing another day, then buildings and dwellings, school, communities (things thery are familiar with). For journal writing activities, youcould teach them hyroglyphics.
