No Mirrors in My Nana's House Lessons?

I'm reading "No Mirrors in My Nana's House" to correlate with Black History for February. Does anyone have any ideas to get across the idea that acceptance is not in a mirror, but rather in the eyes of those who love you for who you are not what you look like? I need it to be simple enough for first graders to understand.

Any good lesson, activity, art, etc ideas?
