I have obtained certification as a substitute. I began this process in Apr. 2005, only to be told that it was late in the year and would have to wait until the next school year. When Aug 2005 came around and the ad was in the paper I applied for the position and never heard anything. When Nov 2005 came the ad was in the paper and once again I went through the process and never heard anything. This is what bothers me, I know that subs are needed. There were 2 occasions where there were no subs in the 5th grade. I have been told by teachers and a principal that reliable subs are needed. I have been approved by the state that I live in but not by the county that I live in. I have left messages but have never heard anything. I don't know what to do now. This is very aggravating and I have now trying to figure out if I just wasted my time. The thing is I really want to try teaching.

sounds weird

I don't even know what to tell you on that one. I know the area I work in is absolutely desperate for subs. Have you tried going down to the district office and politely inquire as to the status of your application?

not yet a substitute

I left a message on the machine of the "Board of Ed" for my county and today I sent out a letter. I know that subs are needed at our grade school because I have been told this by teachers and one of the principals and there have been occasions where they have had to split up classes because the sub did not show up.

Go talk to someone in person!

I would only rely on phone calls to find out the name and exact location (with directions) of the person you truly need to speak with to get signed up. Take your application, resume, certification, and anything else you can think of. Dress professionally and show up at the door during office hours. Explain that you are there to sign up to sub. If they say that you need to do something else, find out all the details on it.

I find that speaking to someone in person is so much more effective than mailings or phone calls. Good luck! :)

Certified teacher?

Another thing - Are you a certified teacher (not just a sub certification)?

If you are not, most schools (around here) put you on the bottom of their list to call. You're a last resort as they want/need certified teachers in the classrooms. My husband got a 1 year license and got called once when they were desperate. That's it.

Definately go down to the BoE and ask to speak with someone. Be prepared to wait all day long if neccesary (bring a book). Tell them your problem and ask directly why they have ignored you when they are desperate for subs.

I couldn't discern your gender from your post, but if you happen to be a man, that explains why you got the brush off. Sorry to say it, but it's the truth. If this is the case, you need to show them that you will not be ignored. Be polite but don't give up. If you are in fact a woman, then I am truly baffled as to why they would just totally ignore you like that.

Good luck!

Good luck -- I agree to keep trying.

I think what the others said was a good idea -- go to the office and see what you can find out.

I'm curious, Mr. G., as to why you think a man would get a brush-off. I've seen male Subs out and about -- if a district needs Subs, I can't see why they would not want to hire a male Sub.

Re: 1dayatatime2 -- your area sounds like they don't need Subs as often as many districts do. I am not a Certified Teacher, (nor did I have any teaching experience when I applied to Sub) and yet I got my first call to Sub twenty minutes after I entered my information into the system. One day I received six calls. (There have been days that I haven't received calls though).

I hope it works out for you aajrn.

Bug 'em!

My district really dragged its collective feet. I got all the paperwork done this summer and didn't get called back to finalize everything until October. Once I was in the system, I was surprised that they had waited so long! This school district seems to have a sub shortage - I get called every day, unless I opt out. There have been days where I must have gotten twelve calls!

So I agree with the previous poster - go in to the office IN PERSON. With all the school cutbacks, I suspect that staff is very overworked, and you probably just need to be in their faces and get assertive!

Good luck.
