Does anyone have novels about the American Revolution (Stories that took place during that time period), preferably historical fiction, that they have done a novel study on with 4th graders?

Dear America

I teach 5th grade, and I really like using the Dear America book, The Journal of William Thomas Emerson: A Revolutionary War Patriot. This book describes everyday life in pre-Revolutionary War Boston. It is told from a child's perspective, and my students really enjoy it. You will need to do a good bit of discussion, which will tie in well with your social studies unit. I believe this book is only available in a hardback version. There is also a video available.

Keeping Room

I and the other fourth grade teachers on my hall used The Keeping Room by Anna Myers for the first time this year. I liked it and many of my students said they did as well. It's about a 13 year old boy, Joey Kershaw, who lives with his wealthy family in South Carolina. His father goes off to fight in the war along with most of the men from their town, Camden, SC. The father gets taken prisoner. The Redcoats take over Joey's spacious home and build a gallows in his mother's garden to hang Patriot prisoners. They allow Joey and his mother and little siblings to live in a small room in the house. Their slaves help the family out in numerous ways. As events progress, Joey gets braver and changes his ideas about girls going to school, slavery, and hating people automatically just because they're on the side of the British.

American Revolution

I am a fourth grade teacher. When I teach the American Revolution, I use all the Jean Fritz books: PATRICK HENRY, WHERE WERE YOU ON THE 29TH OF MAY? / CAN'T YOU MAKE THEM BEHAVE, KING GEORGE? / ...AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED PAUL REVERE? / WHY DON'T YOU GET A HORSE, SAM ADAMS? / WILL YOU SIGN HERE, JOHN HANCOCK?
We also read THE RIDDLE OF PENNCROFT FARM by Dorothea Jenson and THE FIGHTING GROUND by Avi. My students love these titles. Our third grade teachers use the short novels by Idella Bodie.

Johnny Tremaine

This book is great. It is a youth market book written on a slightly elevated level than a lot of books mentioned. Johnny works for Paul Revere at the dawn of the Revolution. It's a classic.

Novel

I didn't do this one with 4th graders (they were 5th), but My Brother Sam is Dead is a fabulous book. It's a higher level and may be better at 4th grade as a read aloud.

George Washington's Socks

This is an excellent book about present day children that are transported back in time to when George Washington is crossing the Deleware. Kids love it. I have used it with fifth graders for several years. We even had the author visit our school.

Redcoats and Petticoats

I read this picture book out loud to 5th graders. They loved it! It really made the kids thinkn about codes and secret messages people use during that time.

I Read This And It Seemed To Violent. There Is Too Much Blood In Our World Today, Could Foster Nightmares For Some Kids. I Am Reading The Riddle Of Pencroft Farm With My Fifth Graders Instead.
