Old 8mm cassette recordings

I wonder if there is a way to convert old 8mm home video to digital format. I've got a couple dozen tapes that I wouldn't mind having SOME of the video transferred, but not all of it. Is there a device I could use to do this myself?

I'm following this because I have possession of the family movies and want to know how to do it.

Take them to Costco Photo. They convert VHS and 8mm to DVD's but I dont think you can designate parts of tapes to convert. They just take the tapes and convert whatever is on them. I doubt you will find a better price but it does take about 3-4 weeks.

If you still want to do it yourself, you'll need a video capture device (available on Amazon for ~$40). You'll also need software that you can get for $50 -$200, or you can use open source software for free (you have to be careful installing freeware). Then just go to town. The time consuming part is the editing process.
