Pay rates for Subs

I recently began substitute teaching in my town at the elementary level. I was a certified (tenured) elem. school teacher in the 70's with a MA in Ed (!) but then had to leave the profession once I had babies (I couldn't get back into it years later, and I had moved out of state). I retrained as a paralegal and have been doing that for the past 21 years. Needless to say, it's been interesting to me to return to the classroom and I have enjoyed it so far. My question is, how do they get quality substitutes at the rate they pay? What rate are you being paid (I know this site is national, so it may be interesting). I received $65.00 per day - which I think is low. Geesh - you could flip hamburgers for the same rate of pay!

RE: Pay rate

I am in Northern California. We get $105/day. Neighboring areas get about $10 less than that here.

$80 a day if you sub at most schools, $100-110 if you sub at an "underperforming" or ESE school. Plus we get a $500 bonus if we work 675 hours in one year.

Old thread

This was covered on the old board a few times. Luckily, I found a link to a good list. :) This should at least get you started on comparing what subs around the world/nation get paid.

I live in Northeast Ohio and get $90 a day. It goes up to $95 if I am in the same classroom for 5 consecutive days. I have a Masters of Education. All subs get paid the same here no matter their qualifications.

Old thread. Good luck!

LOW sub pay

I don't know how our subs do it; they are paid $6.00 an hour. That means $42.00 a day!!!

Sub pay here differs in every district. I live on Long Island and sub pay can be as low as $70/day up to $100/day and more.

Oregon Sub Pay

In oregon I get 139.17 for a full day and of course half that for a half day. This pay goes up and down based on the budget every year. Yes I think this is a good rate, however we have a lot of subs so you aren't working as often. In the end it evens itself out.

Pay rate here

Wow, $139.17 is high. As you said though, with a rate that high, there are going to be more people who are willing to Sub.

In my town the rate is $75 for the first sixty days and $95 after that. The $75 seems low, given that CT is a high cost-of-living state. This week has been slow for calls as it's Parent-Teacher Conference week (Tuesday through Thursday). However, in October I was getting calls pretty much every day.

Sub pay

Here in the SF Bay Area, the district I work in pays $110 per day. Without a teaching certificate, you are not allowed to work more than 20 consecutive days in one slot. Long term subs who work more than 20 days in one slot get more per day.

$110 here in the Bay Area, where the cost of living is so high, is more than some other areas but it might just even out with other regions, given what mortgages and rents go for around here these days.

It's too bad the salaries are so low, but I DO agree with the long term sub rules. I don't think I'm qualified to REALLY teach over time and am happy to give those jobs up to folks who actually through the hoops. Still, they don't get paid enough either.

I sometimes muse on the fact that my district would probably LIKE to pay more, but they can't, given budget cutbacks on education, particularly in California!

It's unfortunate that we can't get a small raise every year, though, just to retain subs who treat their jobs professionally. Oh well! No one forced me to do this - I am happy to have such a cool job!

SW Mich

Here, in SW Michigan, I make $70/day and $35/half-day, or $75/day and $45/half-day depending on which small town rural district I'm working in that day. :D

Sub Pay Los Angeles

I sub in two districts right on the outskirts of Los Angeles: $110 per day. Actually, one district gave us a raise this year from $105 to $111!!! In L.A. Unified I believe it is over $140 per day but I have no desire to work there!

Pay Rate in Northern Rhode Island

Here we make $65 a day until we've subbed for 45 days then it goes up (not sure how much). Certainly not a very good hourly wage. I could make just as much if not more by working in my restaurant instead, but I want to be a music teacher so I gotta pay my dues as a sub first. Gotta love it!

Daily Rate in Delaware

I am just finishing up a three month subbing job here in Delaware. I have a Class A Certification, which means I hold a valid teaching certification (in another state, but not yet in Delaware) so the rate is $104 per day. Because it was a long term position, I am actually being paid $135 per day. (your rate is raised after 21 days in the same position). A Class B Teacher sub (those with a Bacherlor's Degree or better) are paid $83.00 per day. A Class C sub (HS grad or an AA degree) is paid $66.00 per day.

Here in Australia (New South Wales), I get paid $252.45 per day. It never ceases to amaze me how little American subs get.

How is your cost of living?

I'm happy to make $300 plus per week because the cost of living in my area is such that I can eat and pay my bills on that.

Is $252.45 alot in Austrailia, or do you consider that just enough to live on? If I was making that kind of money I would be one of the wealthiest people in my area and live in a mansion!

Cost of Living

I'm curious to know how the Australian pay compares also. I have heard the cost of living is a lot more in Australia, possibly it is equitable to half that in American dollars??? I mentioned before I make $111 per day, which I think is great for a flexible, part-time job that I enjoy, but I probably couldn't live on it full-time here in Los Angeles.

I'm curious about the rate in Australia too

The rate you mentioned, about $250 per day, sounds so high. Curious as to how much do you pay to see a movie in the theater? Here it is about $9. What about a gallon of milk? We pay in the $3 range, unless it's on sale. I'm trying to think of some other comparable rates...I usually pay about $2 for a loaf of bread. If you pay around these same rates, then I'd like to move to Australia to Sub, lol. But if you're paying $30 or so for a movie, over $10 for milk, etc. then I guess I'll stay in the U.S. :)

I think Maryland schools must have the lowest sub rate out of all the states by the sounds of what you all are saying. My sub rate is $61 a day. If you have a bachelors in education and you decide to sub, then the rate goes up to $81. That's ridiculous, I tell you what!!

Aussie pay

I just did a conversion, and my $252 AU comes to $185.81US.

Yes, it's good money and if I was earning that much every day of the year, I would be laughing all the way to the bank, no doubt about it.

As to prices, I pay $14.50 for a movie ($10.67US)
$3.00 (2.20US) for 2 litres of milk (I think that's a bit more than half a gallon??), $2 to $3 for a loaf of bread, depending on what sort. So that sort of thing isn't hugely different. My weekly groceries, to feed two adults, two teenagers, three cats and a budgie is about $200.00, if that helps. Probably average for this sized household.

Petrol is much more here than in the US, and I believe that things like clothes and shoes are dearer here.

However, to sub, and earn that good money, I HAVE to be a fully qualified teacher - as well or better qualified than the teachers I am replacing. I won't even be considered for employment by the Education Department without that degree in education. (I have a Bachelor of Education and a Masters in Childrens Literature and Literacy and still can't get a permanent job!).

substitute teacher at charter schools

I have been substituting at a charter school in San Antonio, Texas for $55.00 a day until recently when I found out that if you work 10 consecutive days they will give you $10.00 a day raise making my pay $65.00 a day. If someone had not informed me of this I don't think that the school would have volunteered the information. Ask question. Its hard work and you deserve the all that you can get!

WOW you all are rich compared to north metro Atlanta. $48 a day without a college degree up to 5 consecutive days, $57 (me) a day for up to 10 consecutive days, over 10 consecutive days you must be a certified teacher and I think then it's $70 something. Georgia is cheap!

Alabama Sub Pay

I can't believe how little we get paid to sub here in Alabama! I didn't realize it until I read how much all of you make. I get paid $47 for a full day. I guess it's a good thing I really love to do it.

I usually ignore the pay threads because they've been done to death on this forum, but it seems like a good place to vent a pay issue. The district I work in (Southern California) is extremely short of subs and it's been quite an issue to get coverage. This week I happened to see the union president's monthly memo to teachers in which he addressed the sub shortage. The gist of the message tells the teachers that they could choose to bump the sub's pay from $90/day to something a bit more competitive, but that would mean less money in the budget for teacher raises. Funny thing about the union though is that they weren't very successful getting the teachers a decent raise earlier in the year. Anyway this gave me a good insight into the attitudes toward subs.
