Has anyone used Phonics Lessons by Fountas and Pinnell? Is it worth the money for me to buy it myself? Anyone know the difference between the grade 1 and grade 2 books?

I loved it, but...

A lot of the lessons will be the same in grade 1 and 2, but in a different order and with different focuses. That's what I noticed between K and 1. The picture cards are fabulous, but you have to prep a LOT. None of the lessons are made for you, which was really difficult. I'm not sure I'd spend the money on it. A lot of the lessons are common sense (sort by first letter sound, syllable bingo, etc). If you have no idea what to do in phonics, it's really helpful. But if you know what skills you should be focusing on, it's not necessary.

Thanks for the feedback.

That's good to hear - this was a resource that was highly recommended to me, but I was thinking it would be a lot of prep. You've probably just saved me a lot of money.;)

I use it weekly and it is in our curriculum. Once you get started the prep is not all that bad and I tweek it to my needs.

We use a program called VoWac for phonics with our 1st graders. It is laid out for you - has picture cards and workbook, also spelling. We really like it.

F&P kits now!!

I agree with jenny. It is a real nice framework, especially for someone who needs or wants a lot of structure. I have the K set of books and do not use it as much as I would like because of the not wanting to make the stuff, and I have other manipulatives and resources to pull from. However, they now sell the kits all made up!! That would be a great tool to have for your grade. Another nice thing is if you have other teachers using it so the scope and sequence is easily observed and student's needs are met.

If you want to look at/ purchase the kits, they are from Primary Concepts. A great, great teacher catalog with so many good things!!

Thanks again

to everyone for your responses. Kali, thanks for the suggestion. I had never heard of that company. Same to you Zookeeper. I'll be checking those out. Wouldn't it be great if someone could come up with the perfect program to meet everyone's needs, with minimal preparation required - all we had to do was teach! (In my dreams!!!LOL)
