Pink eye

I know this is a rather silly question but I have pink eye. I am also a first year teacher. Do I go to work? I don't have school on Monday but should I go on Tuesday? I am trying to get a Dr appointment but the call center is closed- I will try in a few hours. On Tuesday, I have a principal observation and its Valentine's day... I really don't want to miss. Please let me know what you think.

Pink Eye

18 years of teaching and I got my first case of pink eye two weeks ago. It quickly spread to both eyes and was so gross. I went to school after being on medicine for 24 hours, but it still looked horrible. The weird thing is my eyes still hurt. I am seeing the eye dr tomorrow...

I think it depends on how severe it is. Last year, I got a mild case of pink eye...I didn't go to the Dr. though b/c there was an over-the-counter bottle of eyedrops that was made for this purpose. I think I got it at Walmart. It cleared my eyes right up. In the mean time, I made sure not to touch my eyes or face, and I washed my hands a lot.

pink eye/cold in eye

i asked my school nurse once--her response was, she was comfortable with me at school as long as i didn't touch my eye and washed my hands often.

i have a little prescription bottle of drops from the last time--since you don't use much--and just put a drop in when i get a bout.

it's possible that you don't have pink eye, and just have a "cold in your eye"--if you don't have all the yellow, sticky gunk--this was also told to me by our nurse.

you should be able to stop by at a Doc in the Box, have someone look at you, and give you a prescription if necessary.

i want to know what the name is of the OTC that you have, psc. i've never heard of one for pink eye.

Pink Eye

I got pink eye this past week too. It was because our school nurse didn't bother to send home an infected student and this student infected at least 4 others (including me). I had to take off Thursday and Friday. I'm hoping to go back tomorrow. I wouldn't return to school personally until you've seen a doctor. I went on Thursday and he told me I couldn't go back until Mon. You can go on google and run a search on pink eye, which will give you some remedies.

Pink Eye is VERY contagious and I would definitely stay home until you have been on anti-biotics for at least 24 hours. I got pink eye during a hotel stay in Boston (for a wedding...that I was in! Pictures were great...let me tell you!) The doctor said that you can get it by just touching something that a person with pink eye touched, such as a door knob or a pen. So, to avoid spreading it to others, I would just be safe and stay home until you visit the doctor.

Last year I went in to work with pink eye. I knew my eye was bothering me, but I didn't realize what it was until I was getting ready for work the next morning. I was too late to call and get a sub for the day, so I went in. However, I didn't stay long. As soon as they realized I had pink eye, I was told to go home. They covered classes for me until a sub was found. My doctor said not to go back until I had 24 hours of antibiotics in my system, and then to be careful and not touch my eye.

Thank You!!

Thank you for your responses. I finally got through and scheduled a dr appointment for tomorrow morning. I'll see what he says then I can either make my sub plans or plan a Valentine party! :) My fiancee is home with a mild case of bronchitis!!! We are not seeing each other today- we don't live together! Well wish me luck.

Here's what the label says on the OTC eyedrops I used:

Similasan
Healthy Relief
Relieves the redness, watery discharge & burning associated with conjunctivitis

Homeopathic Pink Eye Relief

(The active ingredients: Eurphrasia 6x, Hepar sulphuris 12x, Belladonna 6x)

Do Not Go To School

Like everyone said it is very contageous. Take the sick day or two to get to the Dr and get medicine. We do not let children come to school unless they have had Medicine for 24 hours why would we let teachers?

Sometimes what is wrong with your eye isn't contagious conjunctivitis, IMHO. I think you can get an eye infection from dirty contact lenses thatisn't contagious, but should be attended to. Also you can get a head cold manifesting itself in your eye. Still. If you DO have conjunctivitis, you need the prescription drops. You can visit any doc to get these. You can go to a walk-in clinic to get the script or even where you get your contacts prescribed. You can get a really good exam there too! My daughter got pinkeye when we were on vacation in Chattanooga. We went to the walk-in clinic for the prescription. It took awhile, but she got better.
