Plant Experiment

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for easy plant experiments. I will have about a half hour to conduct the experiment, and I prefer for it to be whole group. I appreciate any and ALL feedback!

my kids love this

We as a whole group sit in the floor, I sit at a table and we "plant" four seeds ( lima bean) in a zip lock baggie with a wet papertowel. We have one with the top left open and watered often, one with the top sealed and watered often (closing the top back each time), one with top open for air but no watering after the initial "planting" and one with water and air but I wrap it completely with foil so it gets no light. We take them over to our window and hang them against the window and label them a,b,c,d so that we know which is which. I give the kids a record sheet that has lines and we record (like scientists) what we did the first day and they draw a pic on the back. I divided the back into four sections by drawing a line down the middle length and width across. We record two or three more times depending on what else we are doing in the classroom. It takes a couple of weeks and it is wonderful, the kids love checking on the growth and changes. They love being scientist with this one and analyzing and making hypothosis as to what will happen next. I hope this helps. :)

Materials: 1 knee high pantyhose foot/student ----soil
-----rye grass seeds (can get at any nursery-cheap)----string----mugs ---variuos beads, toothpicks, etc. to decorate grass heads Procedure:
Drape the foot of the pantyhose into a mug, folding the top edges around the rim of the mug to hold the hose in place. Drop a generous amount of rye seeds in the bottom of the hose. Top with enough soil to make a small ball, the size of a tennis ball. Take the pantyhose off the mug and shake until the soils falls all the way to the bottom of the hose. Gather the top of the panty hose and tie with string to form a ball. Cut off any extra pantyhose. Put the grass heads in a shallow container and water generously. Continue to water daily until the grass hair begins to grow. After the hair has grown, the kids can decorate the heads with beads, toothpicks for earrings, etc. The cutest thing...you can gather a small portion of soil, tie w/ string, forming a small ball for the nose. This is hard

What does a stem do?

My class and I have been researching the parts of a plant and their jobs. When we were talking about a stem's job, to transport water from the roots to the leaves, I demonstrated this by puttinga celery stalk in colored water. We watched it for a couple days and recorded our observations. After 3-4 days the leaves had turned red, the color of the water! It realy helped my kiddos see what a stem's job is!
