QUICK! Question about cutting composition books

I have 30 composition books that I need to cut. I tried to do one on my own, but it frayed the edges. Does Home Depot cut them for free? I am leaving to go in an hour so I wanted to see if anyone has had luck with them before I go. Thanks so much!

spiral notebooks

I had mine cut yesterday at a private print shop in my small community and they charged me $5 to cut 30. I payed 10 cents each for the notebooks. I heard Lowes will do it for less. But please let me know about Home Depot. It probably varies according to communities. Sorry I wasn't much help. Did you try calling them?

No-I'm hoping to find some nice man who feels sorry for me to cut them! ! I am getting pipe that I need cut too, so maybe they'll help me out. If not, the frayed edges aren't too bad, so I could just do it myself.

An honest question, but one many may consider odd, why are you cutting the notebooks? And how, pray tell, did you manage to cut them yourself?

Well, didn't get them cut!

No one at Home Depot could do it so my DH is buying a fine guage blade for our miter saw so I can cut them at home. Love him!

I am cutting them in half and am going to use one half for Sitton spelling work-Fix it, add it, etc-my kids do this for morning work.

The other half I am going to use for math messages with our EDM program. They are the perfect size for both and let me save some $$ buying composition books!

I think it's...

a great idea to cut the comp books in half. Our district is now REQUIRING journals in math and science,but ironically we as teachers need to provide the journals because they weren't included in the school supply list. This way, but cutting, I get two for one. When an entire comp book was used, there were always leftover pages, so this will also help with that as well.

math journals

I'm planning on using 1/2 for a math journal (which never seems to get filled). I feel that wipe off boards are great for POD and HM Circle Time but I want some of these prob. and practice lessons documented too. The other half will be used as a vocab. notebook throughout the day. My little guys have too much in their desk to keep track of so this takes up less space. They have a journal for six traits also! (Comp. book)

I'm sorry dolphinlover you couldn't get these cut. Maybe if you call around you could get a deal. I'm not good at that part.

HEY do any of you remember those BLUE BOOKS? They are like small comp. ones. They would work but I bet they cost more than 15 cents!

Great minds think alike!

I was just thinking the other day that the notebooks I got from Staples for 15 cents would partly go to waste because we never fill them up when I use them for science inquiry notebooks...I thought about how to cut them. Please let me know where you find and the price! Thanks!

Band Saw

I cut mine at home on our band saw. Smooth edges!! Very Happy !!

I use my comp books for SS and Science.

I don't cut my books in half...I put labels on one side for Science Notebook, then flip it over and put a label on the other side for Social Studies. The students just flip them over to the side that we are working on. This also works with a spiral steno notebook, but the cheaper steno notebooks tend to lose pages.

Sometimes...

some students may be intimidated by a whole empty page when asked to write or journa. Offering them a smaller page size can help them feel more confident. (Differentiated Instruction strategy) Goal is to get them writing on a whole page by the end of the year.

Office Max did mine. He did 30 books/3 cuts and charged me $3.47. He wanted to do them individually, but he only charged me what they would have been stacked.

After being told no at one home depot, I went to another. The guy didnt want to cut them but after I pleaded for a moment, he cut them for free. Good luck! Im excited to use them. I think the kids will like them because they are different from the norm.

I used a fine blade for my miter saw and they worked fine! My DH just shakes his head, but I think they are going to be great!

Cutting composition notebooks.

I have been doing this myself for a while because composition notebooks are too hard to write in but they have a smooth feel to them. Pens that don't write well on other paper write well on comp notebook paper. I use a letter opener to pull out the thread. Then a scrapbookers picture trimmer to cut them in half. I line up the holes in the space where the blade slides and trim a few pages at a time. The edges are always neat, never ragged.

How to cut?

Do you just cut them with a band saw? Do you tape them with painters tape first so the cut is most even? Is there any specific blade you use? I'm hoping to get my husband to do this for me this summer.
