Saddened by the news

Is it just me or does it seem like there are many more natural disasters/tragedies during the last twelve months than in recent years? Last year started with the tsunami, we had hurricanes, mudslides and torrential rain in N. California, wildfires in Texas and Oklahoma and now those poor miners trapped in a mine in W. Virginia. I could use some good news.

It is so sad...

Please remember these miners and their families in your prayers. I can't imagine the agony the family members are going through. My great-grandfather died in the largest mining accident (in 1907) that has ever happened. My grandmother told me very sad stories of her childhood dealing with the accident.

Pray also for those that are working in the rescue. I am sure they are weary and worn as well.

Keep praying

I was thinking just this morning about how much heartbreak there is in the world right now with the floods, fires, the trapped miners, the people in the ice rink in Germany that collapsed, the soldiers being killed in Iraq, and on and on. We definitely need to keep praying all these people and their families and as the previous posted wrote, the weary workers trying to get to those miners. God please give these people the strength and guidance they need to get through this most difficult time.

WV Mine Blast

I was just thinking that myself, anonymouse. Makes you wonder who is mad at us. Well, it makes me wonder.

Please do continue to pray for the miners, families, rescue workers, and the community. They're a strong bunch of people but every good thought helps.

This is happening in my husband's home town. The Hubby graduated with a degree in mining engineering so had we stayed in WV, this could have been his mine. It's so surreal.

No one used to know where his hometown was...now people know all too well. His father was at the site yesterday helping out (we found pictures of him on Yahoo). These people are our second family. They're strong and determined. They will find these guys, one way or another.

Continuing to hope for a miracle...:(

disasters

I have also been thinking about the disasters we've been having. I think there are a lot of disasters, but we also are more connected to news than we've been in the past - so many news shows on TV, the internet, etc. It is depressing!

coal in the classroom

I teach in PA and mining is a very big employer around here. I took a class about 8 years a go called, "Coal in the Classroom". It was very imformative and I used a lot of the information when I taught PA history to fourth graders. One of the requirements of the class was spending a real day at a mine and touring the facility. It is a job I would never want to have. I have great respect for the miners. It is a job that is not only dirty, cold, and tiring, it is frightening hard work. I was exhausted just trying to walk with the heavy steel toe boots. I pray that some good news comes soon for those poor families.

I agree

That's weird that you mention it, as I was watching the news tonight, I was thinking the very same thing. There's never a shortage of bad news, but it does seem to be a lot more frequent (and bigger disasters!) in the past year or so.

Good news for once

It's just coming across the news now, but they have found all 12 of the remaining miners alive. :):D:)

Now they can unite and support the one miner that did, unfortunately pass away. :(

sad mistake

I woke up to hear that there was a miscommunication. Only one survived. It is going to be a hard day at school today. I have 5 kids in my room who has dads who are miners. They are going to be thinking about this a lot.

I just heard that too. :( My mother-in-law teaches a few miles from the mine site. From the amount of kids I saw last night (at 1AM) there were a lot of kids that should have been in bed. It's going to be rough all over. Darn the news.

sad news

I grew up in southwestern Pennsylvania, and many children I went to school with had parents or other family members who worked in the coal mines in the area. The news hit me harder than it might have hit some others, mostly because it was like hearing that somebody I could have known just died in the mine in West Virginia. (P. S. I'm a graduate of West Virginia University, also.)

What a sad day...

The local paper delivered early to our school had the headlines "12 Alive!" They had not stopped the presses in time to get the update.

I just felt so sad today. I know a lot of people are blaming the head of the coal company, but I really feel badly for him.

I am not of the same "political persuasion" as our governor, but he sure won me over during this whole thing. He has stayed with the families through it all...he was even there in the morgue with them. He has been tremendous and he has my respect. (He lost an uncle in a mining accident many years ago...he has walked this path before.)
