Ok, so I found these cute books that I wanted to order for my class from one of the book orders. The title is Here Come the Holidays! and the scholastic ordering number is 19660 . Unfortunately, I tore the page out so I would remember, and now I can't find what catalog they came from.

Anyone know which catalog, and have the order form number???

THANKS!

Sorry I ordered them

I was so excited to use these books as my students' Christmas presents...until they arrived and I started putting my gift tags in them. I then realized that many of the stories/poems are quite religious in nature, and are extremely innappropriate for my public school students. :(

Probably...

I had a battle with Scholastic yesterday (during my extra two hours of work time--had a two hour delay b/c of the snow). I can return them for a refund $19.80, but I have to pay shipping b/c "I don't like the books."

GRRRRR, the customer service rep didn't get it--I could lose my job if I gave my kids those books! It's not that I dont like them--I CAN'T use them!

I was politely informed that it was "my fault for not reading the description"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All it says was holiday stories--there is a santa and reindeer on the front--how was I supposed to know!?!?

Eventually I was told that b/c she didn't want to look for the full description and waste any more time, she would send me a shipping label for "this situation only."

I asked to speak with a supervisor, but since "the problem was handled" I didn't need to speak with anyone else!!?!?

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR  :(

Just ordered them.....

Oh rats, I wish I had read all of the messages before I ordered them. I'll show them to my principal and see what she thinks. I do know that all of my kids participate in holiday occasions, so maybe it won't be a problem. I'll keep my fingers crossed. The description doesn't give any clue that it has religious stories in it.

Maybe you can use them..

All of my kiddos celebrate Christmas, but we're still not allowed to talk about the religous aspect.

There are stories about Hanukkah (and I believe Kwanzaa also), but too religous based for me.

Don't get me wrong--they aren't all religious, but there are stories about Mary, Joseph and Jesus...thats not ok for my school.

If you need to return them--I hope you get a nicer customer service rep than I did!

Looking at the book..

Ok, one of the poems is called "Our Christmas Play" and it talks about the characters being Jesus in the manger, and then Joseph and Mary and the three Eastern kings. (I dont know...maybe this is ok, for osme schools, but we're not allowed to mention anything about this.

There is a chapter from the Bailey School Kids--fine

Then something about the meadow mouse--fine

Next story--The Christmas Camel--shaky--talks about the trip to Bethlehem, and doesn't name them, but talks about Jesus, Mary, and Joseph again. The "author's note" talks about Three Kings Day and baby Jesus

Next story is about traditions for different holidays, but again, talks about Jesus and his cradle, also talks about Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.

Then a chapter from Horrible Harry and the Holidaze

Then a wonderful story called A Soldiers Christmas...very heartwarm ing, but it's about a manger and baby Jesus

Ends with Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Perhaps for some schools all of this is fine--but not for mine. Hopefully you can use them!

Update

Just another update--I never received a shipping label, and after two weeks of waiting, I called Scholastic back. The CSR that I talked to this time was much nicer and more helpful. I explained the situation, he agreed that I couldn't possibly use them, and that nothing noted that they were religious stories.

He also explained that it is NOT Scholastic's policy to send shipping labels. Instead, he instantly refunded the $19.80 and asked that I donate the books to a non-profit organization. They will be donated to a children's hospital in my area, and I am much happier with Scholastic!

good to hear!

That's great! It's amazing how if you get the right person on the phone it can make a world of difference!
Next year you should just get the certificate they offer. I think it cost you 95 cents but the kids can pick a book for 2.95 or less. I usually use my bonus points to buy the certifcates as well.
:) Happy New Year! :)

Certificates

I used them last year (I bought them for Christmas, and then misplaced them--oops) in the spring. The only problem was that I had to keep track of who ordered what--it's easier to order 24 all the same! :D

I ended up going to the Scholastic warehouse sale and getting each of my students a Junie B. Jones book. They had them in packs of three for 2.95, so they ended up being about the same price, and my class probably likes these better anyhow!

I had each kiddo fill out a "survey" about which Junie B. books they had at home, or had read, and I was able to give each of them a book that they hadn't read or didn't have.

The kids LOVED them. They got them on the 23rd--party day, two days before Christmas, and they all wanted to read the books instead of doing some of the Christmas activities I had planned! That tells me my choice was a good one!
