Student respect

I teach in a very small First Nations community and have been there for the past 2 years. This is my second year with mostly the same class. This year I am having some issues with student disrespect towards all adults except for the principal. I'm running out of ideas and getting very frustrated. Our school has an EBS policy but even that does not seem to be working. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

same boat

I am in the exact same boat as you, including teaching in a First Nations school. This year the disrespect is terrible and our principal seems very lax. She came out with this policy at the beginning of the year but there is no follow through. I hope that you get some good answers because I could really use some ideas as well. Today my entire class was acting up, refusing to work and talking back. I had to keep the grin on my face and keeping pushing through.:D

What is

a First Nation School and why are you smiling instead of having rules and consequences? I have never heard of this school.

I looked it up

I was very curious about First Nations since I, too, have not heard the term before. I'm glad I looked it up, since I think that population would be interesting to teach. Is the school on a reservation? And what is an EBS policy?

Tough question

I have my own classroom rules, but we have almost 0 support from home for most of the students. Most of the students do not come from very good homes and most live in poverty. I should not have posted anything I guess because my situation would require a very long entry to explain. The smile on my face was to keep my patience because most of the students do not care about consequences. Half of my class is behavior modified and I have no help. Today was a good day.

Understand

Rosberry I am glad you posted. I have a better understanding now. Continue to enforce your rules. I am glad you had a better day.

My school

In Canada we use the term First Nations for our native population. My school is not on a reservation but it is surrounded by a number of different First Nations bands and reservations. It's sometimes very confusing because you generally need to be aware of which band your student comes from and what support is available for that student. EBS is a behaviour tracking system. If a student misbehaves a referral is filled out and sent to the principal, the teacher or both.
