Sub Complaints

Hey everyone! I have been out for 4 days already this school year to observe gifted teachers in the county and also for a meeting on assessment mapping. I will be out again this Thursday and Friday for a math teachers conference that's out of town. The reason why I'm posting this vent is I keep having the same sub that I have already had for the 4 times I have been out and my students hate her. She is not helpful at all when my students need help and what really makes me mad is the fact that I work out all the problems I'm going to have the students work on while I'm gone and that takes about 3 hours for me to do. The reason why I do this is because this sub has no clue about math and I figure it's nice for me to work the problems out for the sub that way she can help the students if they have questions. However, she doesn't help them at all. What am I supposed to do about this sub? The other thing that makes me mad is the principal is the one that picks out the subs for us when we are going to be out.

Hi,
If I were you I'd talk to my principal. Explain your concerns (that she doesn't help your students) and that you'd like a different sub.

Do the subs in your district have a supervisor? In mine they do. If so, I'd call this person and have her talk to the sub about her job responsibilities.

In my school district subs are required to have their teaching license, so when I have a sub I expect that they will help my students (as best as they can-they're not always familiar with the curriculum-understandable), and I usually plan for a pretty normal day of teaching lessons.

You are very much right on that. I do need to talk to the principal. The thing is she was the former home ec teacher at this school until they had to cut the position. So I don't know if she has bad feelings towards the school district now that they had cut her position last year so now she is only subbing. Who knows! Anyway, I will keep you posted.

I don't know if you have spoken with your principal or not regarding your sub, but make sure you have a documented list of complaints to address. Preparing for your sub is very helpful, but she has taken it to the extreme and taken advantage of you. It is RIDICULOUS that you have had to work out Math problems for her so that she can better help your students. Give me a break. Request a new sub.!
