Substitute Teaching on Resume

When I went to my career placement office, she told me that I didn't have to elaborate too much on substitute teaching because most districts know the job responsibilities of a sub. She said if I did anything that would stand out to add it on. The other thing I am wondering about is how do I list all of the school districts I work for. This is copied and pasted from my resume, I am not sure how it will look on here, but this is the basic information.

Substitute Teacher, Nassau County, NY
• East Meadow School District Sept. 2007 – Present
• Plainview Old Bethpage School District Feb. 2007 – Present
• Levittown School District Sept. 2004 – Present
Teach all elementary grades and subjects, including 6th grade
Anything else????????????

basically every day I would work in the words FULL TIME somewhere. Subbing is still teaching, you could also work in some mention that you practiced the craft under often stressful conditions, i dunno. I do think that we subs are teaching, and many do realize that it isn't easy even when you know exactly how to teach.

for example, I know a lot of retired teachers who feel very stressed after a day of subbing.

what I put down...

I put things that seem unique. Like one time I acted as a scribe for a state standardized test. I list the classes I have taught, grade levels, and whether they were learning support or another type of special class. I try to be as specific as possible.

I was wondering the same thing. I have a couple "extra" things I've done during subbing so I will definitely put those on my resume. But how in depth do you guys define your job? I also sub in two different corporations, so I'm wondering if I should make seperate "job" titles for those.

What I Use

I had a similar question earlier. My response might be different b/c I am not looking for FT teaching work, but rather continue looking for positions in higher ed/student services (anybody got a job??

I do not list separately, but rather just give that I work in county schools.

Resume Help

I organize my resume by stating my jobs in this format:

1.Job Title
2. Time Period
3. Company Name. City, State.
4. A brief paragraph using non-formal sentences. If you use this technique you do not refer to yourself so do not use "I," "me," or "our."

Here is what I put for substituting:

Substitute Teacher
August 2007-Present.
XYZ Independent School District. XYZ City, State.
Manage a wide range of middle and high school classes including science, math, English, history, physical education, and art. Assist students in understanding assignments, work with select teachers to develop meaningful and engaging substitute-led lessons, and implement own lessons whenever teachers forget to leave enough material to occupy students for the entire class period.

You might want to change it up a bit and put the paragraph description first and then a point list of all the school districts you sub for. For example:


Substitute Teacher
1998-Present.
Manage a wide range of classes including science, math, English, history, physical education, and art. Assist students in understanding assignments, work with select teachers to develop meaningful and engaging substitute-led lessons, and implement own lessons whenever teachers forget to leave enough material to occupy students for the entire class period.
School Districts-
1. XISD- X City, State. Grade Levels
2. YISD- Y City, State. Grade Levels
3. ZISD- Z City, State. Grade Levels

Your Resume

Your resume looks good. I think its good being specific in your duties, every district is different. In my resume, it tells of me working with general ed and special needs students. I teach all grade levels K-8. I personally think your resume should always speak for you.

I might change my resume then. I listed all six districts I sub for as separate entities and put a job description with them. I wasn't sure how to do it and needed to put something together for my portfolio.

substitute resume tips

I was just looking for suggestions/tips on substitute teacher on my resume and came across. Some rather good points. have to say one thing though, seems like it makes it easier have the school district as entire county down here.
But if you separate school districts for the local schools and they have distinct rules, regulations, and expectations then I think that you should put each one as separate job title.
