Suggestions on Breast Pumps

As I was saying in one of my other posts, I have to buy a new breast pump. My other one died, or at least lost all of it's sucking power. It was an Avent Isis Duo(I think). It was ok, but I'm wondering if there's anything better out there.

I've heard really good things about the Medela pumps, but they're a little pricey and I'm afraid it would physically hurt me to pay that much money for one. Of course, I plan on breastfeeding for at least 4-6 more months and having more children down the road. So I'm thinking maybe I could rationalize that purchase in my mind.

Please tell me what kind of breast pump you have and what you really like/dislike about it? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

I used it for both kids and plan to use it again if DH says yes!

Yes, they are pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Check w/ your insurance. Some will pay for the cost of breast pumps.

I wouldn't buy anything but the Medela! Yes, it's a lot of money to pay up front, but think of how much you are saving by breastfeeding. I had the double "Pump in Style" (I think was the name) and was able to pump SO quickly! Some insurance companies will pay for a pump, so I would check with your insurance just in case.

One other thing, after I was done using my pump, I was able to sell it in a local sell/trade/swap newspaper for almost as much as I paid for it. In the end, I truly only paid 50 bucks for the pump!

Medela Pump in Style!

I nursed for a year and used mine 4-5 times a day. You can do both sides at one time and it works wonderfully!

They are expensive, I paid $200+ for mine 12 years ago, but worth every penny. I tried a cheaper one, but it wasn't strong enough and took forever. I could only pump at home and on my 15 min breaks at work...pre teaching...so I needed something that worked well.

Medela Pump in Style

I also used this pump and thought it was very good. My was a hand-me-down that I passed to my sister. The original purchaser used it for her 2 babies, then I used it for 1, and now my sister is using it. It has lasted a long time, it was originally purchased about 10 years ago.
You can find them on E-Bay, used and new.

Medela

It is the best brand. My mom is a lactation consultant...I know she sells the Medelas but I think she used to rent the machine as well. Let me know if you want me to check if she knows a consultant in your area that might rent. Did anyone else notice the ads to the left (when you hit "reply") of the PT page are for pumps?

Rented a Medela

I used the double for my second child and wouldn't have it any other way. It really did make being at work a little easier when I wanted to be with the baby. It's a great investment for a working Mom and i would consider purchasing one if you plan for more children.

My3jboys---Thanks for the offer! I wish I would have posted this sooner, so I could take you up on it. Unfortunately, I need it by Monday, when I start back to school. Thank you though.

After reading all of your suggestions, I just called the Motherhood store at a nearby mall to see if they carry Medelas. They do! So I guess DH and I will be making a trip to the mall tomorrow. He's going to flip when he finds out how much they cost!

Unfortunately, my insurance doesn't help pay for breast pumps. Figures! Thanks for your advice ladies!!

I had a medela pump in style. I used it for two of my kids (pumped the first year for both of them) my sister used it with her first and soon with her second. So if you consider that it has pumped for 3 kids and soon a 4th- it was a good investment.

My mom got mine cheap from someone who planned to breastfeed, but changed her mind and never used the pump (my mom is an NICU nurse).

I know you need one for tomorrow, but make sure you have checked the prices at the stores around you. I'm in a pretty small town, but found the cheapest pump at a large hospital pharmacy 45 minutes away (my DH and I were a bit boggled to think the hospital had the cheapest price). I know Target and Burlington Coat Factory also carry the Medela pumps.
