Summer jobs?

Hi all, I hope you can help me out here! I am a 3rd year teacher and in need of some money! We're on 10 month pay, and though I've tried to save a little each month, I've had a lot of medical expenses to cover this year. I would love to take the summer off but unfortunately I must work!
Do you have any ideas about what I could do for a summer job?

I enjoy working in the outdoors, am ok with typing also, would prefer a low-key job that's not very stressful (i.e. no preschool summer camp!). I would like to tutor but last year when I tried to do that I couldn't get enough kids to make it a decent paying job. I'd do it again if I could just recruit some more families!

I would REALLY appreciate your help....it's starting to stress me out and I really want to find something soon so I can stop worrying about my money so much.

Thanks!

Lisa

Have you tried

Your public library? telemarketing(ew), work-out centers,

I might pick up some shifts at a restaurant my friends own.

Good luck.

A bookstore? A cafe? You could even pick up some tutoring on top of the other job that way you don't feel as much pressure.

camp

What about summer camps? There are day camps as well as spend the night camps and they are focused on all age ranges and activities.

Our local YMCA's have so many programs during the summer, you could try something like that.

more ideas

If you live in a city or larger center
check out

- teacher stores (see if they need extra summer help)
- tourist facilities such as zoos, science centers, etc., (some may even want to have teachers help create programs for the fall)
- work for local festivals (fun and you earn money at the same time)
- if you enjoy the outdoors and don't mind physical work - check with your parks and recreation department, golf courses, parks, or private companies for jobs in landscaping, grass cutting, etc.,

If you live in an area where there can be a lot of forest fires, check with your local forestry department. They are often looking for people to help in the camps with cooking, buying supplies, secretarial, etc., The money is often very, very good. You'd have to be able to be away from your home for periods of time.

You could also work during the summer at learning centers like Sylvan, Kumon, Huntington, or Kaplan. Of course, it helps if you have worked at one before so you don't waste time on the training process. How about dogsitting? LOL- at least that way you would also be forced to get outside! :)

What I have done...

When I was a first-year teacher, I worked as an office temp in the summer for a few weeks. The great thing is that I only worked WHEN I wanted to and could be off when I wanted to be off. The pay was pretty good. I have excellent typing skills and knowledge of Excel spreadsheets, etc. Plus I had worked in office environments for about 10 years. I felt pretty appreciated at the hospital where I got most of my gigs. They would have hired me anytime if I were interested.

Nanny

I know that there are several families at my school that have to send their kids to a day camp during the summer because the parents work the same hours as they do during the year. If you are close to any of the families, you might offer to nanny, or babysit for the family for the summer months. It is not as much money as teaching, but it is low stress (if you like the family) and a chance to relax without the stress of grades or school.

How about

looking into jobs at your local university (if you have one close by). Ours has a summer academic program for kids going into 1st-6th grades. Its only 5 weeks long, and the pay is good. You can also choose the types of classes you'd prefer to teach.

Sylvan

I've worked at Sylvan before. It's not stressful because there is no prep or work at home and you don't deal with parents. The pay is good--I got 12/hr....just ask when you interview how many hours you can expect!

Become a notary loan signer!

I just finished a one day class to become a notary. You can become a loan signer and work when you want to, making about $150.00 an hour! I am currently job sharing, so I'm going to do loan signings a couple of times a week for extra $. It's an easy way to make extra money and still enjoy your summer. Check out www.notaryclasses.com for more information.
